Description of the workplace

Transport and Roads is a division at the Department of Technology and Society. We undertake research and education within transport planning and mobility, traffic safety, railway and road construction. We have around 40 employees and are situated on LTH campus. The research team Transport Planning and Mobility has around 15 members of staff, ranging from PhD students and administrative staff, to senior lecturers and a professor. This team is now looking for a post-doctoral fellow to contribute to research within travel behaviour analysis.

Subject description

Travel behaviour analysis is about using data to describe and predict travel behaviour and demand for different means of transport. By examining how and why people travel as they do, we can better develop incentives and policy measures to promote sustainable travel.

Work duties

You will have responsibility for conducting your own research projects, as well as contributing to other projects in collaboration with other senior staff. In your research you will carry out surveys and other forms of data collection efforts, analyse data, write articles and communicate your results. You will also be teaching for our master students, meaning that you will prepare and give lectures and assignments, and supervise master’s theses.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • You need to have very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • You have a PhD degree with focus on quantitative methods and models linked to the transport sector.
  • You have practical knowledge of transport modelling tools, such as PTV Visum or similar tools.
  • You have personal qualities such as independence and good analytical abilities. 

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • It is an additional qualification if you have good knowledge of the Swedish language, since this can facilitate collaboration with Swedish public transport actors.
  • It is an additional qualification if you already have practical knowledge of collaboration with the actors within the public transport sector.
  • It is an additional qualification if you have knowledge of path choice models.
  • It is an additional qualification is you have experience of teaching at university level.
  • It is also seen as an additional qualification if you have experience from writing research proposals.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years, starting from 1 February 2023 or by agreement. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
