Description of the workplace

The position is within the division of Communications Engineering at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology at LTH in Lund. The division has 8 senior researchers and around 20 PhD students, and a deep collaboration with industry. The division works within wireless communication in a wider sense and the activities span from communication theory to implementation of antenna structures.

We offer

Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme.

Subject description

The area joint wireless communication and sensing where radio signals from the mobile networks are used for efficient and reliable communication and accurate positioning, all with low latency. This means that the subject area includes mobile communication systems for 5G and 6G, channel modeling, channel characterization, radio-based positioning, and associated signal processing.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

We aim to explore two paths, the first where we utilize 5G in the millimeter wave band to provide accurate 3D position and motion information. The second path is to explore joint communication and sensing from the perspective of large intelligent surfaces, where the many antennas can be used for unprecedented accuracy with medium bandwidths.[JA3] [FT4]  The work includes planning measurement campaigns and collecting data from custom transmitters and receivers at 28 GHz and with a large intelligent surface setup at mid-band (2-6 GHz) frequencies. The measurements will be performed in both indoor and outdoor scenarios. Based on the insights from the measurements and models, suitable positioning algorithms will be developed where uncertainties can be included.

The project is a part of a larger national project with Swedish industry and Chalmers University of Technology and an international EU H2020 project, hence includes project meetings and joint project work.

The work duties also include:

  • Collaboration with industry and academic partners
  • Teaching at a undergraduate and graduate level
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received
before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience from radio channel measurements and characterization
  • Documented knowledge in radio channel modelling
  • Deep knowledge in radio based positioning methods.
  • Knowledge about high resolution parameter estimation methods.
  • Documented ability to cooperate with other researchers.

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the
assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Knowledge in MATLAB.
  • Knowledge in wireless propagation and ray tracing methods.
  • Practical experience from statistical signal processing methods.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills
complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years and will start as soon as
possible according to agreement. The period of employment is determined in
accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
