Description of the workplace 

The research group Traffic safety and behaviour is part of the Department of Technology and Society at the Faculty of Engineering. The group has a long history of conducting research on accidents, traffic simulation and speed safety measures connected to vulnerable road users. Now the research group needs a new colleague for two projects analysing safety of bicyclists and pedestrians starting from understanding what makes these transport modes unsafe in Sweden and several African countries.

Work duties 

A project from VINNOVA is trying to connect crowd-sourcing data to observations to enhance the understanding of why people use bicycles and how to improve their usage. In parallel a European project (AfroSafe) is aiming at the implementation of the Safe System approach in Africa, to lead to less fatalities and accidents in road traffic. This project has particular focus on Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) such as cyclists and pedestrians is focusing also on what hinders and makes walking or biking unsafe. You will contribute to the data analysis using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Your role will also be to manage the communication between the coordinator of AfroSafe and the African partners. 

The position may require travelling to Africa (for example Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia) for meetings or data collection. 

 

Qualifications  

Required qualifications for the position are:

  • You need to have very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • You have a master’s degree in Transportation related studies.
  • You have experience in quantitative data analysis using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) or other database management, for example from your master’s thesis.
  • You have experience in qualitative data collection on travel habits, for example from your master’s thesis. 
  • You are independent in your work but, if needed, you can collaborate and work in team. 

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • It’s considered an additional qualification if you have experience in collaboration with African universities, road authorities or associations.
  • It’s considered an additional qualification if you have experience of collaborating in big projects.
  •  It’s considered and additional qualification if during your studies you have conducted internships or research in different universities than the one you graduated from. 
  • It’s considered an additional qualification if you have a driving license valid in Europe and African countries. 

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development. 

 

Further information 

The position is a fixed term position for six months at 100 per cent of full time and starting as soon as possible.
