Lund University, Faculty of Science

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Lund Theoretical Particle Physics group consists of ten senior scientists, five post-doctoral fellows and seven PhD students. The group works on various aspects of QCD and collider phenomenology, with emphasis on event generator development and applications thereof, on hadron and flavour physics, notably with chiral perturbation theory as a tool, and on the phenomenology of physics beyond the Standard Model, especially Higgs physics and unified gauge theories. Further information about the group can be found on the website www.atp.lu.se/tpp/.

We enjoy good relations with the experimental particle physics group in Lund, which is a member of ATLAS and ALICE, and which explores the possibility of fundamental physics experiments at the upcoming European Spallation Source in Lund and in the search for Dark Matter (LDMX).

Job description
The position entails maintaining an active research programme in theoretical particle physics with emphasis on phenomenological studies of Quantum Chromodynamics in high energy collisions involving hadrons and ions. The focus will initially be on developing models for describing collective effects, applicable to both small and large collision systems, and implementing them in general purpose event generators. The work should complement the models based on strings currently being developed in the group for the Pythia8 event generator.

The position will also include teaching at both undergraduate and graduate level. Research will be conducted on at least 70% of full time, while teaching will be conducted at approximately 20% of full time. The senior lecturer will be expected to supervise doctoral students. The position will include some administrative duties, and in the long run the lecturer is also expected to accept leadership assignments.

The unit encourages its co-workers to engage with the society in general. Although the research the lecturer is expected to carry out is not expected to result in innovations which  directly benefit society, they are expected to engage in outreach activities, such as giving popular science lectures to the general public.

The work assignments of the position, as well as the relative proportions of research and teaching may change over time. A successful applicant is expected to build up active research in theoretical particle physics and related areas. This also means that they are expected to apply for external funding for the activities in the department and to develop collaborations with other units, within and outside the university, working with similar research questions.

Eligibility
Those qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer are a person who has demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve (according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 4).

For this position the qualified applicants must have a doctorate within the field of theoretical particle physics.

It is a requirement to have completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means. In certain cases, exceptions can be made from this requirement.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Basis of assessment
Basic competence requirements are documented strong scientific skills, good knowledge of various aspects of particle physics phenomenology, as well as understanding of experimental data, and ability to interact with experimental particle physicists. The applicant must also have documented skills in independently initiating and leading research projects, as well as having an interest and ability to teach and supervise students, doctoral students, and postdocs.

Specific requirements are documented research skills within the area of model development for event generators for high-energy collisions of both hadrons and heavy ions. These skills should include a deep understanding of phenomena such as jet quenching, and other collective effects in hot and dense collision systems. Documented knowledge of models based on, e.g., effective kinetic theory, that are alternatives to those implemented in the Pythia8 program is considered as a merit.

The qualifications will be evaluated based on the quality and quantity of peer-reviewed scientific publications, as well as on publicly available event generator programs.

Today, research and postgraduate studies at the University are largely based on the ability and competence of the individual researcher to obtain external funding. Hence, a capability to obtain research grants in national and/or international competition is a requirement together with the capability to establish and maintain international collaborations with other research groups.

Documented experience of teaching and development of new course curricula, at basic as well as advanced (including postgraduate) levels within the applicants’ own and adjacent fields are merits. Documented experience of supervision of Bachelor, Master and PhD students as well as Postdocs is also a merit. Documented experience in communicating science, and the societal values of research, are relevant and likewise merits.

In addition, it will be taken into account how the applicant can strengthen and supplement the Department´s research and teaching in this field. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules

It is expected that any non-Swedish speaking appointee within a three-year period will master the Swedish language well enough to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish.

Design and content of the application
We recommend you to write your application in English, since it will be assessed by international experts. The application should be formulated according to the Faculty of Science’s Instructions for applications for an academic position. Upload the application as PDF-files in the recruitment system.
