Description of the workplace

At the research group for Virus Biophysics, research is conducted in physical virology and structural virology with a focus on human herpesviruses. Special focus is on physical mechanisms that control the ejection of viral genome into the host cell during the viral division process. We also study how viral capsids are assembled inside the cell, how the cell's mechanical properties respond to an infection, and which processes lead to the reactivation of the herpesvirus from a latent (dormant) state. In addition, we are developing novel antiviral drugs that target biophysical processes in the viral life cycle. We discovered groundbreaking antiviral mechanisms of action that do not lead to development of resistance in the infected cell. This project benefits from newly built infrastructure in Lund – MAX IV, which is the world’s brightest X-ray synchrotron, and soon to be completed European Spallation Source (ESS) for neutron scattering studies.

The group is led by Professor Alex Evilevitch and consists of both research and technical staff. The laboratory is located at the Biomedical Center in Lund.
