Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
Lund Observatory invites applicants to a Researcher position in Theoretical Astrophysics. We are seeking candidates with backgrounds in numerical models of galaxy formation/evolution or star formation. The position is for one year. The candidate must have a strong background within galaxy formation code comparison projects. Anticipated starting date is February-March 2023.
Theoretical astrophysics at Lund Observatory encompasses galaxy formation, galactic dynamics and evolution, star formation and dynamics, planet formation and dynamics, high-energy astrophysics, and stellar evolution. We have strong observational links, including involvement in the ESA missions Gaia, 4MOST, CHEOPS, PLATO and LISA.
Description of work
The researcher will work in collaboration with Dr. Oscar Agertz and the galaxy formation group in Lund. Applicants are encouraged to define their own research, but will also get the opportunity to participate in projects on a wide range of topics, including cosmological zoom simulations of galaxy formation, the origin of the Milky Way, dwarf galaxy formation, galactic scale models of the turbulent interstellar medium, and simulations of star formation using radiation-hydrodynamical methods. The group has allocations on domestic supercomputer facilities, which the researcher will get access to. Teaching may also be included.
The applicant will
1) lead aspects of the international AGORA galaxy formation code comparison project, and
2) take a leading role in the theory working group within ESA’s ARRAKIHS mission.
Qualification requirements
The assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject. The applicants should hold a PhD in astronomy/astrophysics. Applicants must have experience in galaxy formation code comparison projects, as well as the science related to ESA’s ARRAKIHS mission (hydrodynamical models of galaxy formation with dark matter).
Terms of employment
Fixed-term employment full-time for one year.
Application procedure
The application should include a CV, a copy of the PhD degree diploma, a publication list, and a one page statement of research interests. Names and contact information of three persons willing to give references should be supplied.
