Description of the workplace

Transport and Roads is a division at the Department of Technology and Society. We undertake research and education within transport planning and mobility, traffic safety, railway and road construction. We have around 40 employees and are situated on LTH campus. The research team Transport Planning and Mobility has around 15 members of staff, ranging from PhD students and administrative staff, to senior lecturers and a professor. This team is now looking for a post-doctoral fellow to contribute to research within transport planning.

Subject description

Transport planning with a focus on social differences is about describing and analysing how issues of social justice are handled in transport planning, specifically with a focus on planning transport-efficient communities.

Work duties

You will have responsibility for managing work packages within a research project, as well as contributing to other projects in collaboration with other senior staff. In your research you will carry out, interviews, document analysis, surveys and other forms of data collection efforts, analyse data, write articles and communicate your results. You will also be teaching for our master students, meaning that you will prepare and give lectures and assignments, and supervise master’s theses.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

• Research within the subject area
• Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
• Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
• Actively seeking external research funding
• Collaboration with industry and wider society
• Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

• You need to have very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• You need to have very good oral and written proficiency in Swedish, since it’s needed for tasks such as interviews and analysing policy and planning documents.
• You have a PhD degree with focus on qualitative methods and social justice within transport.
• You have experience from applying discourse analysis, policy framing or similar in research.
• You have personal qualities such as independence and good analytical abilities. 

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

• A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
• Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

• It is an additional qualification if you already have practical knowledge of collaboration with the actors within the public transport sector.
• It is an additional qualification if you have knowledge of how social differences are handled in transport planning.
• It is an additional qualification is you have experience of teaching and supervision at university level.
• It is also seen as an additional qualification if you have experience from writing research proposals.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years, starting in February 2023 or by agreement. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
