Professor of Mathematics Education - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Centre for Mathematical Sciences has around 150 employees, with approximately 40 in the division Mathematics, Faculty of Science, where this position is situated. Research at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences is conducted in Algebra, Operator Theory and Complex Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, Differential Geometry, Dynamical Systems, Scientific Computing and Numerical Analysis, Image Analysis, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, as well as Mathematical Statistics, Probability Theory, and Mathematics Education. 

The research in mathematics education is among other things concerned with improving the teaching at the Centre for Mathematical Science and questions related to education of teachers in mathematics in primary and secondary schools. An important question is which role programming could play in facilitating students’ learning of mathematics. 

The degree courses lead to Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees and, at the Faculty of Engineering, to Civil Engineering degrees.

The division Mathematics, Faculty of Science, has the main responsibility for the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in mathematics, as well as for courses in mathematics and mathematics education for students who intend to apply for supplementary teacher training in order to qualify for an MSc degree in secondary education. 

The teacher education programmes at Lund University are coordinated by the Department of Educational Sciences and have a strong connection to research, for example through the presence of several professors in subject didactics and educational sciences. The Department of Educational Science is part of a national research school in educational science focused on collaboration between the academy and school with the support of the Swedish Research Council. The department also participates in the national initiative for practice-based research on teaching and learning and leads the research in this area at Lund University.

Job description
The position mainly entails research and teaching in mathematics education and mathematics. The emphasis is on research and research education.

The successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in the research group in mathematics education through research collaborations, supervision and seminars, and to support pedagogical development at the department as well as surrounding parts of the university.

The successful candidate is also expected to cooperate with other departments within the university involved in the teacher education, as well as with upper secondary schools in the region in order to strengthen the division’s profession-related competence. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to actively apply for external funding to support the research at the department, to develop collaborations with other units at Lund University as well as other universities, and to participate in international research networks.

During the first year of the employment, the successful candidate is expected to coordinate the division’s work to improve the quality of the research and education in mathematics education in connection to the new application for degree awarding powers for the teacher education programme in mathematics.

The position includes teaching and development of courses in mathematics education and higher education teaching and learning at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences and other parts of the university, as well as supervision of degree projects. Some teaching in basic courses in mathematics may also be included. The teaching amounts to at most 50 % of full time. Administrative tasks may be included. The work assignments of the position, as well as the relative proportions of research and teaching, may change over time. 

Eligibility
A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor (according to Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 3).

To qualify for this position, applicants must hold a doctorate in Mathematics Education, or demonstrate equivalent competence.

Applicants are also required to have completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or to have acquired equivalent knowledge by other means. In certain cases, exceptions can be made from this requirement.

For academic staff at Lund University, a general requirement is being suited to and having the abilities required for fulfilling the duties of the post well.

Basis of assessment

• The applicant must have documented scientific skills in mathematics education. 
• The applicant must have documented ability to obtain research grants in national and/or international competition.
• The applicant must have experience of teaching in mathematics education for upper secondary level.
• The applicant must have experience of teaching courses in mathematics at basic university level.
• The applicant must have experience of teaching courses in higher education teaching and learning.
• The applicant must have experience of supervision of PhD students and undergraduate students.
• The applicant must have experience of course development and a reflective approach to teaching.
•  The applicant must have good experience of academic leadership.
• Documented experience of interaction with the society at large and in communicating science and the value of research to society is likewise relevant and a merit.

For the appointment, consideration will be given to the question as to how the applicant, through documented skills and experience, can strengthen and extend the Department’s and Lund University´s research and teaching in the field. Applicants should present their current research and a research plan for the next few years. The scientific qualifications of applicants will be evaluated mainly on the basis of the quality and quantity of peer-reviewed scientific publications.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

The appointment will be made in accordance to the Lund University Appointment Rules.

It is expected that within a period of three years, a non-Swedish speaking appointee will master the Swedish language sufficiently well to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish.
