Description of workplace

Lund University Humanities Lab is an interdisciplinary research infrastructure for researchers, teachers and students from across Lund University. The lab houses technology, methodological knowledge, data handling and archiving expertise. The lab's activities are centered around issues of cognition, communication, culture, and learning, as well as around method development. Several projects are interdisciplinary and are conducted in collaboration with social sciences, medicine, natural sciences, technology and e-science. We have partners and collaborators locally, nationally and internationally. The lab is a dynamic environment that enables researchers to combine traditional and new methods, and to collaborate within and outside the university to meet the scientific challenges that lie ahead to understand, explain and improve the human condition. Among the Lab's facilities is an EEG facility.

The division of Logopedics, Phoniatrics and Audiology is an interdisciplinary research environment with several specializations and a strong clinical anchoring. In Lund, the subject has been broadened and deepened towards research that includes both audiology and speech therapy with a focus on language and cognition (Cognitive Language and Hearing Science).Through this orientation we have developed the divisions various areas in a completely new way and our research can be characterized as based on diversity with strong, both theoretical and methodological, coherence. This structure and cohesion distinguish Lund from speech therapy and audiological research at other universities in Sweden and makes our research internationally viable and competitive.

The faculties are now announcing a joint postdoctoral position with a focus on advanced expertise in electrophysiology (EEG), event-related potentials (ERP) and preferably other neuroscientific methods (fNIRS, fMRI). The position includes 50% research at the Faculty of Medicine and 50% service in the Humanities Laboratory with a focus on method development, responsibility for lab facilities, and developing interdisciplinary collaborations.

The physical workplace will be shared between the Division of Logopedics, Phoniatrics and Audiology (Lasarettsgatan 21) and the Humanities Lab in the SOL building (Finngatan 1).

Work duties

Conduct competitive cutting-edge research in one of the Cognitive Language and Hearing Science profile areas using functional brain imaging. Within the framework of activities in Cognitive Language and Hearing Science, it is included that the applicant if given the position:

• Independently conducts research within the framework of one or more of the department's focus areas, i.e. language, cognition and hearing. Applicants attach a project plan with the application.

Within the framework of activities in the Humanist Laboratory, it is included that the applicant if given the position:

• Development of lab technology and method, incl. active work with analysis of electrophysiological data, programming of data flows and post processing, as well as keeping abreast of and driving developments in the field;
• Responsibility for the lab's equipment (maintenance, updating, upgrading, purchasing with the help of the procurement manager);
• Being the contact person for the lab's users of the EEG equipment. Support users in choosing the right system based on needs, discuss stimulus presentation and codes, be available for problem solving, inform users of updates and other changes in the lab;
• Training users through courses and workshops with a focus on both theory and practice (e.g. capping, artefact rejections and data analysis);
• Work to strengthen and develop collaborations between the Humanities Lab and the Faculty of Medicine, as well as act proactively towards other neuroscience groups and units at LU (e.g. Correlative Image Processing and Analysis/CIPA, Lund BioImaging Center, etc.).

Eligibility

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. This eligibility requirement needs to be met no later than the time when the employment decision is made. We will mainly consider candidates who have completed their PhD degree no more than three (3) years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier. These circumstances refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical work, positions of trust within trade union organizations or other similar circumstances.

Basis for assessment

At Lund University, employment as a postdoctoral researcher provides opportunities for scientific and pedagogical merit. There is mainly room for merit in research, but also for certain higher education pedagogical training. Teaching may be included in the tasks. For the employment as a postdoctoral research, scientific ability will primarily be taken into account.

Other qualifications

The following are also required for the position:

• PhD in a relevant field with a research background
• documented experience of both high-impedance and low-impedance systems
• must be able to process raw data in EEGLab or an equivalent system, record clean data, set up visual and auditory studies, code stimulus presentations and analyze data (preferably in R)
• experience of work with data visualization
• good verbal and written skills in the English language
• good ability to work independently
• good collaborative skill
• good ability to take own initiatives

The following are a merit:

• Formal training in functional neuroimaging
• experience with other functional brain imaging methods, e.g. fMRI and/or fNIRS
• Previous responsibility for EEG lab environments
• Other meritorious qualities are flexibility and pedagogical ability since the work requires collaboration with users with different levels of knowledge (novices and experts)

Terms of employment

This is a full-time employment limited to 2 years with preliminary start date on or after 1st of April 2023, or according to agreement. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral researcher”) between SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated November 19, 2021.
