Description of the workplace
The position is based in the Division of Mechanics, Materials and Component Design (MMC) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences at the Faculty of Engineering (LTH), Lund University. The successful candidate will join the Group of Material Science (MaTeS) closely collaborating with the Divisions of Physical Chemistry and Synchrotron Radiation Research within LTH, ESS, KTH and Uppsala University as well as many other research institutions within Sweden and abroad. We are a very international research group with a diverse teaching portfolio popular among local and international students having the culture of stimulating work environment. An essential aspect of group activities is close collaboration with various stakeholders including Lund University supervisors, ESS instrument teams as well as environment, health & safety, manufacturing, procurement and facility management.

Work duties 
Lund University is seeking qualified candidates for one-year research engineer position  to support a joint project with the European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS). The project focuses on in-kind contributions for developing innovative science using polarised neutron techniques and carrying out polarised neutron instrumentation work for the ESS on several instruments for imaging and scattering with a particular focus on beamlines ODIN and DREAM. The project is funded by Vetenskapsrådet (VR) with in-kind contributions from KTH, Lund University and Uppsala University as well as ESS. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to support in-house research and teaching activities in the group of Materials Science (MaTeS) at LTH, Lund University.

The successful candidate will be working with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, engineers and technicians and carry out a variety of instrumentation tasks:

  • produce the actual conceptual and detailed engineering designs along with relevant documentation based on requirements by the various stakeholders;
  • provide manufacturing oversight, assembly lead and site acceptance tests;
  • provide technical and administrative support during system testing, integration and commissioning, participate and execute relevant reviews / validation;
  • contribute to the maintenance of in-house laboratory instruments, development of new experimental methods and measurement techniques.
  • contribute to research and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as co-supervision of graduate and postgraduate students at MMC division;
  • assisting in seeking external research funding and administration related to the above.

Qualifications
Requirements for employment are:

  • bachelor’s degree or above in engineering or science in an area closely related to the position focus.
  • experience in mechanical design using 3D CAD software.
  • experience of work in a laboratory environment and basic maintenance of mechanical equipment with electronic components.
  • fluent in English.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • creativity and ability to solve technical problems.
  • ‘can-do’ attitude along with desire and abilities to learn and adapt in a dynamically changing multicultural environment.
  • knowledge of engineering codes and standards.
  • safe work practices and experience in training new users.
  • advanced computer skills including programming and data analysis.
  • knowledge of neutron polarisation and polarised 3He technology.
  • work or other relevant experience in metallographic specimen preparation and mechanical testing as well as various material categories are advantages;
  • working knowledge of Swedish.

Further information
It is a full time fixed-term position for one year starting in 04.2023 or by agreement.
