Description of the workplace 

The Department of History is a large department encompassing three subjects: History, Human Rights and East and South-East Asian Studies. It has more than 80 teaching staff and researchers. The Department also has a large doctoral education programme, including a National Graduate School in Historical Studies. The research in history broadly focuses on cultural history. In terms of chronology, the research extends from the early Middle Ages to the present day with an inclination towards the early modern period and the 1900s. Work duties and areas of responsibility

We are now seeking one researcher within the project Noble Wills. Inheritance and distribution of property within the Swedish nobility, 1750-1810. The purpose of the project is to investigate the economic position of the Swedish nobility during the early modern period through a study of testamentary practice. This enables an analysis of factors behind the deteriorating position of the nobility during the 19th century and the overall significance inherited property had for this development. The employment is 75 percent of full-time and extends over a period of approximately 16 months. You will work within the project together with the PI, docent Martin Dackling.

You are expected, in collaboration with the PI, to actively conduct research within the framework of the project and to publish the results. As the project is related to other projects at the department, you are also expected to cooperate with researchers within these projects. You will also have a special responsibility for the organization of an international conference with a focus on inheritance. You are also expected to attend and actively participate in the environment at the department.

Qualifications

Requirements for employment are:

1. PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, completed preferably within the last ten years. Under special circumstances – parental leave, illness or similar – the PhD may have been completed earlier. A certificate supporting these reasons is to be submitted with the application. 
2. Good reading skills for older Swedish handwriting
3. Good knowledge in English, in speech and writing

Additional qualifications for the position are:

1. PhD in a subject with a historical focus
2. Documented experience of reading older manuscripts (demonstrated, for example, in publications based on such material)
3. Experience of working with source material such as probate inventories and wills
4. A research profile focused on the early modern period
5. Experience with quantitative analysis
6. Good cooperation skills

Further information

The employment is 75 percent of full-time, with entry on May 1, 2023, or per agreement.
