Description of the workplace

The Department of History comprises three disciplines – History, Human Rights Studies and East and Southeast Asian Studies – and has more than 80 teachers and researchers. The department hosts a well-established, vibrant and internationally oriented research environment devoted to the history of knowledge, the Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge (LUCK) (see https://newhistoryofknowledge.com). This centre consists of about fifteen active researchers and has many international networks and collaborative projects. Chronologically, the centre’s research covers both early modern history and modern history/contemporary history.

Work duties and areas of responsibility 

We are looking for a researcher in the history of knowledge with a focus on the history of the knowledge society. The focus on the history of the knowledge society means that we emphasize the societal dimension of the history of knowledge. It is important that the applicant can demonstrate that his or her research can contribute to overall discussions regarding the history of the knowledge society, and that the proposed project is formulated in relation to larger social, political, economic or cultural processes in the past. We welcome applications regardless of time period and geographical focus.

The main task of the researcher is to carry out independent research of high international standard, but you will also in more general terms contribute to the development of the research at LUCK. This may involve, for example, organising seminars, workshops or inviting guests. We expect you to have a high and frequent physical presence at the department. A particular task for you is to contribute to the development of research on the history of the knowledge society.

Qualifications 

Eligible for employment as a researcher is anyone who, no more than five years before the deadline for application, has completed a doctoral degree or a degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. If there are special reasons – parental leave, illness, etc. – the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier. In such cases, proof of these reasons must be submitted with the application.

A very good knowledge of English is required.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

• A doctoral degree (or equivalent) in a subject with a historical focus
• The ability to formulate fruitful scholarly questions on the history of the knowledge society that can contribute to the development of the history of knowledge
• Good, documented knowledge of the history of knowledge as a field, including its contemporary international research debates
• Independence, collaborative skills and scholarly curiosity
• Experience in developing research environments and collaborations, for example by organising workshops or editing publications.

Assessment criteria

The basis for assessment is scholarly merits and the ability to develop and conduct research of high international quality on the history of knowledge, with an emphasis on the history of the knowledge society. The assessment is based on the submitted documents and a possible interview. Only applicants whose project plan and previous work can strengthen the research environment will be considered for this position.

The position is 75% of full-time for 9 months, with the first day of employment on 1 September 2023.
