Description of the workplace 

At the Section of Neurobiology, Department of Experimental Medical Science, Faculty of Medicine, our research is based in understanding neurological diseases and developing new therapeutic avenues. The Section comprises 11 groups with a total of ~75 researchers and constitutes a collaborative and inclusive research environment.

In our research group, we investigate the role of neurons and glia in disease development by generating induced pluripotent stem cell-based human in vitro models of neuronopathic lysosomal storage disorders. Our goal is to identify disease mechansims, the contribution of different brain cells to the disease, and to generate new therapeutic approaches to treat these diseases that affect mainly children.

The research team is led by Isaac Canals, and it is located at the Biomedical Center of Lund. The group is international; therefore, the working language is English. We are now seeking for a driven, independent, and experience researcher in neuroscience to develop a new project in the lab. We are looking for someone that can contribute to maintain the nice and healthy work environment that we have created in our lab.

Work duties and areas of responsibility 

You will primarily work in a project to investigate the role of astrocytic networks in controlling and triggering neuronal network dysfunction in Sanfilippo syndrome, a rare childhood neurological disorder. This work will involve differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells towards neurons and astrocytes, the use of genetically encoded calcium indicators, and immunocytochemistry assays. You will be fully responsible for executing the project. You will also publish articles in research journals, contribute to conferences and assist other lab members in calcium live imaging for other lab projects. Oher work duties within research group may arise. 

Qualifications 

Requirements for employment are:

- To qualify for the position, you must have a PhD or equivalent degree within a subject relevant for the position (i.e. biology, biomedicine or equivalent),

- Experience in induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation towards neural cells

- Experience in recording, analyze, and interpret calcium dynamics experiments with calcium indicators

- Experience in viral generation

- Experience in immunocytochemistry and confocal imaging

- Good knowledge in neuroscience and brain disorders

- Competence to compile scientific data for presentations and for scientific articles

- Very good knowledge in English

The employment is a temporary position for 6 months with a scope of 100 per cent of full time starting in 05-2023 or by agreement.
