Description of the workplace 

Environmental and Energy Systems Studies division (IMES) is one of the oldest sustainability-focused research environments at Lund University, with its research and teaching dating from 1968. While based at the School of Engineering, the research conducted at the division is interdisciplinary and spans over five broad research areas: Fossil to Biobased, Industrial Transformation, Policy & Governance, Resources, Supply Chains & Security and Sustainable Futures. This position is located primarily within the Sustainable Futures research area.

Work duties 

This position is focused on supporting research and project management activities, mostly within the project ‘Plastics in a circular Society: Alternative organising beyond resource efficiency’. This project focuses on initiatives outside the mainstream industries that address the plastic crisis, for example, through new ways of producing, (re)using and recycling it, as well as reducing its use or substituting it by other materials. The project is conducted together by researchers from Lund University (IMES and Political Science), Copenhagen Business School and Graduate Institute Geneva.

When it comes to research-related activities, you will be involved in mapping alternative organising initiatives that address the plastic crisis (contributing to a database of initiatives), support literature reviews, data analysis and other relevant research tasks. Your work may also include data gathering in relation to the international plastics treaty negotiations. Support of project management activities will include contribution to tasks such as setting up and updating the project website, organising meetings and communicating project results. You will work closely with the principal investigator and the research team.

 

Qualifications  

Required qualifications for the position are:

  • You have a bachelor’s degree and are pursuing or have completed a master’s degree (e.g. in engineering, sustainability studies, organisation studies, political science or other programmes relevant for this position)
  • You have a very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • You work well independently and in a team
  • You are reliable and have good communication skills
  • You have experience of collection and analysis of qualitative data

Additional qualifications

We consider it an additional qualification if you meet one or several of these criteria:

  • You have a good command of languages other than English (especially French, German or Spanish, but these can also be other European and non-European languages)
  • You have experience of website editing.
  • You have experience of collection and analysis of quantitative data.

We consider it an additional qualification if you have knowledge about or personal experience of activities related to one or several of the following domains:

  • plastics (e.g. how it’s produced/consumed/disposed of and problems surrounding it)
  • alternative organising (e.g. social and solidarity economy, community organising, digital commons practices)
  • heterodox political economy frameworks (e.g. degrowth, diverse economies, critical perspectives on circular economy).
  • international governance

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development. 

 

Further information 

The position is a fixed term position for 6 months at 50 per cent of full time and starting as soon as possible.
