Description of the workplace

You will work within the Traffic Safety and Behaviour research group. The group performs research on a variety of subjects related to traffic safety, including policy development, evaluation of safety measures, vulnerable road users and automated vehicles. The group uses innovative methods for traffic data collection and safety evaluations, such as video analysis, surrogate measures of safety, virtual reality simulations and instrumented bicycles. It is involved in various national and international activities related to research and education in traffic safety domain.

Work duties

The position is connected to the Horizon Europe project AfroSAFE (www.afrosae-eu.africa). The project deals with the propagation of the Safe System / Vision Zero approach to traffic safety in the low- and middle-income countries in Africa. The project is largely focused on organizational analysis of the road safety work in best-performing (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands) and African countries. Another focus area is the local capacity building through various educational activities and pilot projects in Zambia, Tanzania and Ghana.

You will take an active role in planning and implementing the research and education activities according to the project description. This will involve tight cooperation with African partners remotely as well as actual visits to Zambia, Tanzania and Ghana.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Research within the subject area
  • Collaboration with transportation authorities, stakeholders and wider society, predominantly in the African context
  • The position includes the opportunity for training in higher education teaching and learning.
  • Assist in seeking external research funding
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

 

Qualifications

Appointment to a position as a researcher requires that the applicant has a PhD.

Required qualifications:

  • You have a PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position. 
  • You have very good oral and written proficiency in English. 
  • You have experience of collaborations in multi-disciplinary and multi-national teams.
  • You must have research experience within the traffic safety domain.
  • You must have good familiarity with the African context, ideally previous experience working with traffic safety or public health issues in Africa.

Additional requirements:

  • It is considered an additional qualification if you are independent as a researcher.
  • It is considered an additional qualification if you have experience of communication with the general public and of explaining research in a popular science format.
  • It is considered an additional qualification if you have a professional network within the traffic safety or public health domain in Ghana, Tanzania or Zambia.

Further information

The position is a fixed term position for 9 months at 100 per cent of full time.
