The Department of Service Studies is looking for a dedicated student worker for the autumn semester 2023 who will work with communication and marketing of our master's programmes and have the task of being SI leader. We are looking for experienced students who study on our master's programme in service management.

Description of the work place

You are employed at the Department of Service Studies and receive your SI-leadership training from the European Centre for SI-PASS. You will work in close collaboration with the communicator, master coordinator, teachers and those responsible for the SI program at the department. You will also have collaboration with other SI leaders within the programme.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program, developed at University of Missouri, USA. At Lund University, the method is used at the Faculty of Engineering, Faculties of Humanities and Theology, and Faculty of Social Sciences.

Work duties

Your duties are to plan, coordinate and carry out activities for Master´s students together with the department´s communications officer and Master´s coordinator. Your main duties are to organize events, functions and other activities that aim to communicate and market our programs as well as motivate and engage the students in their program. You will also work with our Instagram account.

As an SI-leader you will regularly arrange meetings where you lead student groups on your subject according to the usual SI-methodology. The purpose of the SI-session is for the student group to discuss the concepts and questions of the subject and together come up with answers and solutions. Students learn to see each other as learning resources and are trained in collaborative learning.

The SI-leader´s task is to lead the students and structure the SI-sessions so that these run efficiently. The SI-leader should not teach or present any new material, as the group should together process the contents of the course, already presented by the teachers. The SI-leader acts as a support and sounding board in this process.

The duties as an SI-leader include:

  • prepare and lead SI-sessions on the masterprogram in service management,
  • register and report attendance at each SI-session,
  • write a short summary after each SI-session,
  • schedule your own SI-sessions and assist with SI administration,
  • participate in SI-tutorials when offered.

Other duties at the department may also occur.

Eligible for employment

According to chapter 5 § 10 HF, a requirement to be employed as a teaching assistant is that you have been admitted to studies at undergraduate or advanced level.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position you must be:

  • admitted to and are going to start the second year at the Master’s programme in Service Management
  • have participated in SI-sessions as a student,
  • up to date with your studies
  • responsible, flexible and be able to adapt to the requests of the student group,
  • it is easy for you to collaborate with others,
  • you can work independently, 
  • have good knowledge in English, spoken as well as in writing.

Desired/additional qualifications:

  • experience of similar administrative duties,
  • experience of working on events or projects,
  • experience of working with social media.

Requirements for being an SI-leader are also the completion of the SI-leadership training. This is offered for aspiring SI-leaders before each semester. You can apply for this position without having completed the SI-leadership training as yet. It is meritorious if you have obtained good results in your studies. Great emphasis is also placed on personal suitability.

Other information

This is a fixed term employment starting in August 2023 and will last until June 2024 and is 20 % of a full time equivalent. The employment must not unfavorably affect the studies of the teaching assistant and may not be in combination with other employments. Regulations regarding educational employment such as teaching assistant can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance HF, Chapter 5, Sections 8-12. Annual leave is included and will be planned within the employment.
