Description of the workplace

You will be working at the department of Electrical and Information Technology, and primary in the division of Communications engineering. The division has 8 senior researchers and around 20 PhD students, working with wireless communication in a wide sense, with activities spanning from communication theory to channel measurements/modeling and implementation of advanced test beds. Your research will be performed mainly in the context of a recently started EU project, 6GTandem – A Dual-frequency Distributed MIMO Approach for Future 6G Applications (https://horizon-6gtandem.eu/), with deep collaboration with both academic and industrial partners across Europe.

Subject description

The research subject for this position is coordinated dual-frequency wireless communication, where sub-10GHz and sub-THz bands are operated jointly to deliver new and energy efficient services for 6G. In particular, the focus will be on characterization and modeling of propagation conditions in the two frequency bands and development of strategies and techniques for coordinating their joint operation to maximize synergy effects.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

In context of the 6GTandem project, you are expected to perform joint research with project partners on a selection of topics, including:

  • Requirements specification for a modeling framework for 6GTandem use cases.
  • Channel characterization and development of link-level models for
    sub-THz and sub-10GHz operation.
  • Development of cross-layer algorithms and optimization for traffic and
    interference management.
  • Design of medium-aware waveforms and algorithms for robust and
    energy-efficient transmission.
  • Development of new services, including reliable positioning, sensing and fronthaul support.

In addition to the above, participating in an EU project implies that you:

  • Actively participate in project meetings and workshops, both online and by traveling to meeting/workshop locations across Europe.
  • Contribute to project deliverables.

Work duties also include:

  • Teaching at an undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received
before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Documented knowledge in modelling of wireless systems, including wave propagation.
  • Extensive experience with wireless system design and analysis, including antenna systems, baseband processing, and system simulations.
  • Documented ability to cooperate with other researchers.

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.
Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the
assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Experience with system simulation tools, such as MATLAB.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaborate in larger teams.
  • Experience from optimization of, and algorithm development for, wireless systems.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills
complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

We offer

Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme. You will be part of an experienced wireless communication research team, with close ties to other subject areas at the department, forming a unified whole from electromagnetic theory and antennas design to the design of integrated circuits and advanced hardware systems.
