The Department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, Faculty of Engineering invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in Electromagnetic Theory. The position is located at the Division of Electromagnetics and Nanoelectronics. The division has 15 senior researchers and approx. 20 PhD students and a rich collaboration with industry. Within the division, we work in a broad field from electromagnetic theory to physical electronics and semiconductor designs. Our research focuses on a wide range of applications from THz electronics, through advanced calculations of electromagnetic waves and their interaction with material structures, to neuromorphic structures for artificial intelligence. We also work on quantum and cryogenic electronics, advanced low-power devices and circuit concepts for the internet of things, power electronics and design and evaluation of metamaterials. Our teaching includes courses in electromagnetics, basic and high-frequency electronics as well as advanced device physics, at both bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.
Subject
Electromagnetic Theory
Subject description
Electromagnetic theory forms the basis of electrical engineering and optics, and describes the interaction between electromagnetic fields and material structures at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. The subject aims at a deep understanding of electromagnetic phenomena to enable scientific achievements and technological progress. To achieve these goals, solving Maxwell's equations with advanced mathematical methods is central, and both theoretical, numerical and experimental methods are relevant. Examples of important applications are antennas; communications and radar systems; modeling, characterization and design of materials at the macroscopic and microscopic level; inverse scattering problems and nondestructive testing; as well as microwave technology for particle accelerators. For this position, we are specifically looking for expertise in the design of electromagnetically functional surfaces (metasurfaces), where the surface structure is adapted to control the electromagnetic field.
Work duties
Employment as an assistant professor is a tenure track position, which aims for the holder to develop their independence as a researcher and educator. The work duties mainly involve research and teaching. The position includes the opportunity to undertake five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education.
Work duties include:
Qualification requirements
Qualification requirements for employment as an assistant professor are fulfilled by someone who has been awarded a doctorate or has the corresponding research competence.
Primary consideration should be given to someone who has been awarded a doctorate or achieved the equivalent competence within five years of the deadline for application for employment as an assistant professor. However, someone who has been awarded a doctorate or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds. Special grounds are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances.
Assessment criteria
For appointment to assistant professor, the following shall form the assessment criteria:
Additional requirements
Other qualifications
The extent to which the applicant, through their experience and skills, may complement and strengthen ongoing research, undergraduate education, departmental innovation, and how they can contribute to the future development of the department will also be taken into consideration.
