Description of the workplace

The Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC; www.ludc.med.lu.se) opens a position for a bioinformatician to be employed as a postdoctoral researcher.

LUDC is one of the largest diabetes research centers in the world with approximately 300 investigators and staff members working towards improved diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diabetes. The Centre combines expertise in genetics, epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, physiology and clinical diabetes and endocrinology to achieve these goals.

A central theme of the Centre is to develop precision medicine to improve health and the quality of life of diabetic patients. The post-doc position is assigned to the research group Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease led by Professor Olle Melander and is placed at the Clinical Research Center (CRC) in Malmö.

Work duties and responsibilities

Applicants are invited to apply for a position as post-doc at LUDC. The employment is a fixed-term employment for two years (100 %) with the possibility of an extension for one more year (all in all, 3 years).

An ideal applicant will be instrumental for the continued expansion of advanced biostatistics concerning oral and intestinal flora, oral health and its significance for cardiometabolic diseases within the framework of Professor Olle Melander’s research group Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease in collaboration with Daniel Jönsson who is Associate Professor in Periodontology.

The project will mainly focus on investigating the links between oral health, oral flora, intestinal flora, genetics and the risk of future cardiovascular diseases and diabetes in population-based studies.

We expect the successful applicant to be an experienced biostatistician/bioinformatician/epidemiologist who can analyze large microbiome datasets with complex statistical designs, can summarize and present the results in a report including publication-ready tables and figures, as well as contribute to article writing.

Great importance will be given to personal qualities. In the role of postdoc with us, you need to be driven, flexible and proactive, both good at collaborating and able to work independently.

 

Eligibility
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. This eligibility requirement needs to be met no later than the time when the employment decision is made, and evidence that this requirement is met needs to have been sent in by this time at the latest. We will mainly consider candidates who have completed their PhD degree no more than three (3) years before the date of the announcement. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier. These circumstances refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical work, positions of trust within trade union organizations or other similar circumstances.

Basis for assessment
At Lund University, employment as a postdoctoral researcher provides opportunities for development of scientific and pedagogical merit. Development of research merit is prioritized, but there are also opportunities for higher education pedagogical training. Teaching may be included in the tasks.

For the employment as a postdoctoral research, scientific ability will primarily be considered.

 

 Other qualifications 

  • PhD in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology or related field, with a proven record of accomplishment in applying quantitative methods to data analysis tasks as well as programming experience.
  • Proficiency in R.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team, including dentists, medical doctors, nutritionists, laboratory scientists, bioinformaticians, and data analysts.
  • We will also pay attention to personal attributes, favoring individuals that are motivated, take initiative, are flexible, detail-oriented, and can work independently in a well-documented way.
  • Documented oral and written proficiency in English.

The following are considered a merit

  • Education in medicine
  • Experience using reproducible research tools (e.g. RMarkdown, Git, Conda).
  • Knowledge and experience in other programming languages (e.g. Python).
  • Experience in analyzing large microbiome data sets at species (e.g. meta-genomic species counts and abundances) and gene level (e.g. expression of functions in terms of KEGG orthologs), and experience in performing exploratory, hypothesis testing and hypothesis-generating analyses.
  • Experience of working in an international environment.

 

Terms of employment
The employment is a full-time, fixed-term position for 2 years, with a possible extension for up to one additional year. The preliminary starting date is the 15th of May 2023 or as agreed. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated November 19, 2021. The employment can be extended if there are special circumstances. These circumstances refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical work, positions of trust within trade union organizations or other similar circumstances.

 

Other information

The employment is a full-time employment for two years, with the possibility to a one year extension. Starting date July 1st, 2023, or according to agreement.
