Description of the workplace

SI-PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) is a very successful educational model that was developed in the United States during the 1970s and has spread to many higher education institutions around the world, including most higher education institutions in Sweden. The European Centre for SI-PASS at Lund University is one of five centers in the world responsible for informing, educating, and evaluating SI-PASS, and has an overall responsibility for SI-PASS in Europe.

As an SI leader you are employed at Graduate School and receive your SI leadership training from the European Centre for SI-PASS. You will work in close collaboration with both teachers and those responsible for the SI program, as well as with other SI leaders.

Being employed as an SI leader gives you experience within leadership as well as an attractive leadership education. Through SI leadership, you will gain in-depth subject knowledge and experience as an instructor, as well as valuable professional contacts with the department/faculty as well as other SI leaders and the student group. Experience shows that former SI leaders are highly competitive in the labour market.

As an SI leader, you are also part of a worldwide network that includes SI leaders in several countries (such as the USA, Australia, South Africa, Canada, the UK, and Ireland), including the opportunity to participate in international conferences and events.

 Work duties

As an SI leader, you will hold weekly SI-PASS sessions with the students in specified courses where you will lead a study group in accordance with the SI methodology. The purpose of the SI-PASS sessions is for the students to discuss the course content, concepts and questions and together come up with answers and solutions. Through the sessions, students will learn to see one another as learning resources and will gain skills in collaborative learning.

As an SI leader, your role will be to lead the students and structure the SI-PASS sessions to achieve the most optimal outcome. You will provide support and facilitate in the students’ understanding of the course content.

Aside from leading SI sessions, you will also have the following tasks:

  • Attending and participating in a mandatory two-day SI training (August, 2023)
  • Mandatory attendance and participation in Graduate School’s Program Introduction Day on 25 August 2023
  • Scheduling and leading weekly SI-PASS sessions
  • Keeping and registering attendance after every SI session
  • Writing reflective reports after each session and participating in evaluations related to the SI program
  • Participating in meetings and/or events organized by the European Centre for SI-PASS
  • Planning and executing social/academic activities for Graduate School’s student body
  • Other relevant administrative tasks

 

Qualifications

Requirements for the positions:

  • You are admitted to, and in your first year of one of the following Graduate School programmes:
    • o Master of Arts in Middle Eastern Studies
    • o Master of Science in Development Studies
    • o Master of Science in Global Studies
    • o Master of Science in Social Scientific Data Analysis
    • o Master of Science in Social Studies of Gender
  • You have a very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • You are on track with your studies
  • Completion of SI leadership training. This is offered for aspiring SI leaders before each semester; however you can apply for the position without having completed the SI leadership training as yet.
  • In addition to this, emphasis is placed on personal suitability.

Additional qualifications:

  • You have previous experience in a similar role (e.g. as SI leader, teaching assistant, etc.)
  • You are independent, flexible and have collaborative working skills

 

Further information

The position is a fixed term position for a seven-month period at 10 percent of full time and starting in August 2023 or by agreement, although not beyond 25 March 2024. The employment as a teaching assistant is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 2017:284), 5 chapter 8-12 §§. The employment must not unfavorably affect the studies of the teaching assistant.
