Description of the workplace

The combustion engine division at Lund university is internationally renowned and offers a very strong research environment with 12 fully equipped test cells consisting of a mix of single cylinder optical engines and multi cylinder engines, running on a palette of sustainable fuels, and with diagnostic tools and analyzers for detailed analysis of a wide range of combustion species. 

The team, with five professors, is well known for its strong collaborations and networks with inhouse as well as external experts on numerical modeling, laser diagnostics, automatic control, heat transfer and life cycle assessment. The group´s networks include the international automotive and shipping industries and leading international universities.

Subject description

Postdoctoral position in sustainable fuels and advanced combustion concepts for combustion engines. The goal is to explore new sustainable fuels and innovative research to support the transition to a sustainable society. This involves the analysis of how such new fuels impact engine performance and emissions, and ultimately engine applications and climate impact. 

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development. 

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Perform experimental research on sustainable fuels and advanced combustion strategies in combustion engines
  • Analyze and publish results in well-established scientific journals within the subject area
  • Interact with the team for the development of innovative research within the subject area
  • Collaborate in seeking external research funding for mutual benefit
  • Participate in teaching, including supervision degree projects and doctoral students.

Qualification requirements 

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Documented experience of experimental combustion engine research

Assessment criteria 

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop, conduct and publish high quality research.
  • Teaching skills. 

Other qualifications that merits:

  • Expertise within experimental research on combustion engines.
  • Expertise within sustainable fuels
  • Experience with Labview
  • Experience with FTIR analysers
  • Examples of innovative research / creative problem solving
  • Is independent and has a good ability to plan and deliver
  • The ability to collaborate with external partners, for instance industry
  • Education that constitutes an additional qualification
  • Other that offers value to the position

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of two years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
