Your team
The four ICT groups at MAX IV deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of electronics, software, infrastructure, and scientific data. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment that requires close collaboration with the staff to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 50 people in total who work in the 4 groups in a well organised and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.

The smooth functioning of the MAX IV synchrotron facility relies strongly on the efficient, reliable and flexible operation of its IT infrastructure. The site hosts a vast variety of computer equipment, from the control of scientific instruments to HPC and multi petabyte storage to office computing and printers.

MAX IV is looking for a positive and service minded person to complement our IT Infrastructure group with supporting the experimental and accelerator activities. The responsibilities will focus on responding to operational issues that impacts experiments. Ability to troubleshoot in a mixed environment with a complex network structure is essential. The position includes on-call service and the successful candidate must accept to be available for on-call duty according to current labour regulations, about 1 week/month.

Other responsibility will include general IT administration with a focus on Linux and the Linux Desktop environment. There will be a large amount of direct interaction with the end users, hence good communication and people skills are essential. The successful applicant is also expected to have good all-round knowledge when it comes to trouble shooting PC hardware.  

Your main work tasks will be

  • Administration and maintenance of Linux desktop and servers.
  • Monitor and triage requests submitted to the help desk.
  • Respond to trouble calls related to accelerator/experiment operation.
  • Follow up and document the trouble calls.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • Extensive experience with installing and managing Linux computers.
  • Thorough knowledge of networking and ability to troubleshoot connectivity problems.
  • Good knowledge on file system permissions in a heterogenous, networked environment.
  • Good knowledge of user management in an AD environment.
  • Good knowledge of PC hardware and thorough troubleshooting experience.
  • Excellent command of Swedish and English, both spoken and in writing.

  • Experience with managing a containerised environment.
  • Experience with managing IT security.
  • Experience with managing and troubleshooting MacOS computers.
  • Experience with managing and troubleshooting Microsoft Windows computers.
  • Experience with VMware.

As a person you are easy going and enjoy working together with other people. You must be open to discuss new solutions and alternative views on the situation. You will be in daily contact with staff that will ask you to solve their problems, good communication skills are essential for a successful candidate.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. It will receive up to 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.
