Work duties

The Department of Sociology is looking for a postdoctor for a two-year, 100% research position as part of Show & Tell, an ERC-funded research project investigating new kinds of visual evidence as they move between epistemic cultures and professional communities. How do scientists use new kinds of imagery to show what they know? Images like brain scans and botanical illustrations are central to scientific practice. But today, accessible technologies can create lifelike algorithmically generated images – photo-like pictures made through the manipulation of digital data. These new kinds of images have introduced distinctive challenges to our ability to trust the things we can see with our own eyes. The project investigates what happens when new kinds of visual evidence move between epistemic cultures and professional communities, with an empirical focus on photo-like algorithmically generated images. For more information about the project see https://www.showandtell.lu.se .

We are looking for a researcher with a documented interest in the visual culture of machine vision and algorithmically generated images. The work involves data collection, analysis and/or presentation, both individually and as part of our collaborative team. The applicant should demonstrate very strong analytical skills, creativity, flexibility and the ability to work with others in a team.

The postdoctor is expected to:

- collect high quality data/material for the project

- develop their own research questions and analyses with reference to the overall aims of the project

- participate in regularly scheduled project meetings

- work closely with the PI and other team members on all aspects of the project.

- write original and/or co-authored scientific articles for publication within the period of employment, and/or present scientific results through other channels, such as radio, exhibitions, comics, software or events.

Duties include research within the project (100%). If you want to know more about the project or the position, please contact PI Alison Gerber alison.gerber@soc.lu.se .

Qualification requirements and merits

A doctoral degree in the social sciences or humanities is required. The doctoral degree must have been obtained by the date for the employment decision.

The assessment is based on documented scientific ability, including the ability to develop and carry out high quality research on issues and materials relevant to the project as a whole. Applicants must be able to demonstrate excellence through their publications or other work samples, including the ability to independently develop and conduct high quality, creative research.

The application will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

- the quality and strength of submitted work samples in terms of documented engagement with image theory and/or the aesthetics and/or visual culture of machine vision and/or algorithmically generated images

- the relationship of submitted work samples to the existing focus and aims of the research project

- evidence of the applicant’s ability to work in a team environment and/or in scientific collaborations.

Merits include:

- public-facing publications or other creative presentations of scientific results

- ability to work with Swedish-language data

- it is essential that the applicant is physically present at the workplace in Lund during their employment as they are expected to actively participate in regular project meetings and contribute to the department's research environment.
