The research group
The Medial Temporal Lab is headed by assistant professor Laura Wisse and focuses on neuroimaging in neurodegenerative diseases (https://www.multipark.lu.se/medial-temporal-lab). In addition, there will be a close collaboration with the international Hippocampal Subfields Group (www.hippocampalsubfields.com) as part of this project.

We are now looking for a PhD student for our project “Integrity of the medial temporal lobe and its relationship to memory performance”. The PhD student will conduct research under the supervision of Laura Wisse, Rosanna Olsen, Mikael Johansson and Nicola Spotorno.

We aim to create a good work environment based on respect and consideration in our relation to each other.

Project description
With an aging population, cognitive health and dementia have become important research areas, where especially retaining healthy memory and preventing memory impairments is an area of great interest. The medial temporal lobe is a region in the brain that is crucial for different memory processes and measuring the integrity of the structure and function of this region is therefore an important way to study healthy and impaired memory performance. Both functional and structural imaging of the medial temporal lobe in healthy and cognitively impaired populations can shed a light on the inner workings of different memory processes and how impairments can be prevented.

Work description
The PhD project aims to explore the role of structural and functional integrity of the medial temporal lobe using different imaging and behavioral techniques (in vivo, ex vivo, structural, functional and vascular, and eye-tracking) in different populations, including patients with different types of dementia and healthy individuals. These measures of integrity will also be related to measures of cognitive performance, specifically memory, where possible.

The main duties of PhD students is to engage in their research studies, which includes participating in research projects and mandatory third cycle courses studies. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties. Other assignments within the research group may also occur.

Qualifications
The following are required for the position:

  • Master of Science, or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent, within medicine, biomedical science, psychology, neuroscience or a related field.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication in English.
  • Strong communication, presentation and writing skills.

Merits include:

  • Experience with MRI and the segmentation of hippocampal subfields.
  • We are looking for someone with an affinity with cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging and neurodegenerative diseases.

Others:
Starting date for this full-time position is the 1 of October, or by agreement.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who: have completed a second-cycle degree, have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

Basis of assessment
The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
