The Centre for Mathematical Sciences has around 150 employees, with approximately 40 in the division Mathematics, Faculty of Science, where this position is situated. Research at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences is conducted in Harmonic Analysis, Operator Theory and Complex Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, Differential Geometry, Algebra, Scientific Computing and Numerical Analysis, Image Analysis, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, as well as Mathematical Statistics, Probability Theory, and Mathematics Education.

The research in Harmonic Analysis and Operator Theory at the department focuses on operators acting on spaces of analytic functions, reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, uncertainty principles, weighted inequalities, vector valued operators, and applications in control theory of infinite-dimensional linear systems. 

Type of employment
Limit of tenure, 6 years, according to chapter 4, section12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, with the opportunity to promotion to senior lecturer. 

Job description
Employment as Associate Senior Lecture is a career development position, where the holder is to be given the opportunity to develop his or her independence as a researcher and educator.

The principal assignments are the following:

  • Research in the subject area.
  • Teaching at basic, advanced and research level.
  • Supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students.
  • Applying for external research funding.
  • Science communication.
  • The work duties also include professional development and some administrative tasks.
  • Administrative tasks in the form of student counselling can also be included, depending on the interests and qualifications of the candidate.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research group in Harmonic Analysis and Operator Theory, for example via joint research activities and seminars.

Initially, the amount of teaching is at most 30%. The work assignments of the position, as well as the relative proportions of research and teaching, may change over time. 

Eligibility   
A person who holds a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise shall be qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their degree or have obtained corresponding expertise no more than five years before the last date for applications. A person who has obtained a PhD or the equivalent expertise earlier may be eligible if there are special grounds 

For this position the qualified applicants must have a doctorate in mathematics.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Basis of Assessment 
A good ability to develop and carry out high-quality research, and teaching skill. The main selection criteria for the position are scientific and pedagogic skills, with an emphasis on scientific skills. 

More specifically, the following items will be evaluated:

  • The applicant must have documented scientific skills in Harmonic Analysis and Operator Theory and its applications.
  • The applicant must have a high international level as a researcher, relative to career length, as evidenced by publications in academic journals of high quality.
  • The applicant must have postdoctoral experience of relevance for the subject.
  • The applicant must have experience of teaching in mathematics at university level.
  • The ability to teach in English is a requirement.
  • Documented ability to obtain research grants from external funding bodies is a strong merit.
  • Experience of leading and developing courses is meritorious. A reflective approach to teaching is also a merit.
  • Documented experience of interaction with the society at large and in communicating science and the value of research to society is likewise relevant and a merit.

Great consideration will be given to the question as to how the applicant, through documented skills and experience, can strengthen and extend the Department’s research and teaching in the field. 

Particular importance will be placed on the applicant´s independent research plan. This plan should indicate how the applicant´s research can strengthen the research profile of the Department.

It is expected that any non-Swedish speaking appointee within a three-year period will master the Swedish language well enough to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish.

Promotion 
An associate senior lecturer shall on application be promoted to senior lecturer employed for an indefinite period if they have the required qualifications and are deemed to be suitable with reference to the assessment criteria established by the Faculty of Science. An associate senior lecturer can only apply for promotion once.

Assessment criteria for promotion to a permanent position as senior lecturer:

  1. Good national and international standing as a researcher
    The applicant conducts research of high quality that garners attention nationally and internationally
    The applicant conducts research with a clear, independent profile.
  2. Good teaching ability
    The applicant has good knowledge of the subject and can apply these in practice when teaching.
    The applicant has good teaching skills and demonstrates an ability to develop their teaching within the subject area. 
    The applicant has a reflective approach to teaching and learning.
    The applicant has five weeks’ training in teaching and learning in higher education, or the equivalent.
  3. Ability to participate in the supervision of doctoral students
    The applicant has documented experience and the ability to supervise doctoral students.
    The applicant has a reflective approach to the supervision of doctoral students.
    The applicant has at least two weeks´ training in supervision, or the equivalent.
  4. Ability to engage with wider society and communicate their activities
    The applicant has documented experience and the ability to engage with wider society and communicate their activities.
  5. General ability to lead and develop activities
    The applicant has documented experience of and ability in academic leadership.

The application for promotion is to be submitted to the faculty no later than six months prior to the end of the appointment as associate senior lecturer. The application for promotion is to be judged by the teacher’s appointment board after acquisition of the opinion of at least two experts on the subject.
