Workplace description and subject area

The position is based at the Division of History of Ideas and Sciences, which is a part of the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences. The division offers first-cycle study programmes and courses up to a Bachelor’s degree, second-cycle study programmes and courses as part of the Master’s degree in Historical Studies (in collaboration with the Department of History), and a doctoral programme. The division is part of the National Graduate School of Historical Studies, which is a collaboration between five Swedish universities for doctoral studies specialising in historical subjects.

The history of ideas and sciences at Lund has a relatively broad research profile. There is an established tradition of research in the history of philosophy at the department, and a more recent emphasis on conceptual history.  A further focus is on periods further back in history, mainly connected to the broader field of early modern studies. Several researchers are additionally interested in the history of medicine and in the history of science and technology linked to the interdisciplinary field “Science and Technology Studies (STS)”. 

Duties

The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in all the activities of the division and department. 

The main tasks include planning and conducting teaching in the history of ideas and sciences in Swedish and English. Teaching comprises lectures and seminars as well as supervision on all levels. Course coordination, course administration and development of teaching and learning are also included in the teaching responsibilities. Teaching might also be called for in other closely related subject areas within the department.

In addition to teaching, the position includes research and research-related activities (at least 20% of full-time hours) and active participation in the subject’s research environment. 

Management assignments, such as departmental responsibilities, may be a future possibility for the right candidate. 

Required qualifications

  • Completed doctoral degree in history of ideas and sciences or equivalent research expertise relevant to the subject area in question and the duties included in this post.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education of at least five weeks or possess equivalent competence that has been acquired in another way. If there are valid reasons, for example that the applicant has lacked opportunities to acquire the requisite knowledge in their former positions, an appointment can still be made. In such cases, the appointee is to complete the required training in teaching and learning in higher education within the first two years of employment in order to fulfil the requirement.
  • The ability to teach in English from the first day of employment.
  • The ability to teach in Swedish within two years of the first day of employment. 

Assessment criteria

  • Good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to
    the character and traditions of the subject. 
  • Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • An ability to participate in supervising doctoral students.
  • An ability to participate in and develop public engagement and other outreach activities.
  • An ability to otherwise lead and develop activities, including administrative ability.

In the assessment, equal consideration is given to teaching expertise and research expertise. Personal abilities significant for performing the duties well will also be considered.

Specific qualifications of additional merit in descending order

  • Broad experience of teaching in the history of ideas and sciences at university level from entrant to second cycle level.
  • Ability to obtain external research funding.
  • Experience as director of studies, head of division or other management assignments.
  • Proven strong collaboration skills.
