Subject description

The post doc will work in an ongoing research project on mapping ecosystem services from urban nature-based solutions. The project is a EU Horizon research project called “Naturescapes” and its goal is to study how the implementation of nature based solutions can create climate resilient, nature positive, and socially just communities. There are multiple university and NGO partners from Europe and Latin America, and the postdoc will have opportunities to interact with a large community of professionals and in case study areas across the world as part of this project.

We welcome applicants for a two year post doc position on nature-based solutions focusing on mapping and assessing the ecosystem services NBS provide. The position is based at the Centre of Environmental and Climate sciences. The post doc will be a part of an interdisciplinary research environment with expert knowledge in modelling of ecosystem services, coastal protection, as well as urban planning and policy.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Work duties include:

  • Research activities on nature-based solutions focusing on mapping, modelling and analysis of ecosystem services of NBS
  • Assessment of the spatial distribution of NBS in case study areas
  • Evaluate relations of NBS to biophysical and socio-economic factors.
  • Mapping techniques using GIS and remote sensing
  • Reviewing methods for assessing benefits of nature based solutions
  • Analysis of spatially explicit data
  • Modelling benefits of nature based solutions, especially coastal protection

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the date of employment decision. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Requirements

  • PhD in environmental science, physical geography, ecosystem analysis, ecology, or environmental engineering or other relevant subject area
  • Documented skills in modelling, GIS methods and statistics
  • Documented oral and written skills in fluent English are required
  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research

Mertis:

  • Knowledge and experience on modelling ecosystem services
  • Experience of programming in R or Python
  • Experience using remote sensing
  • Experience in environmental science, urban ecology, urban planning
  • Experience from working in international research projects
  • Language skills in other languages as e.g. spanish

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • High skills and experience to work in international networks
  • Work experience in the qualifications needed

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S and OFR/S, dated 1st February 2022.
