Description of the workplace

You will be working at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology, and primary in the Division of Communications Engineering. The Division has 8 senior researchers and around 20 PhD students, working with wireless communication in a wide sense, with activities spanning from communication theory to channel measurements/modeling and implementation of advanced test beds. Your research will be performed mainly in the context of a large project performing theoretical and experimental research, funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. An overarching goal of the project is to build and demonstrate the capabilities of fully digital Large Intelligent Surfaces.

You will be part of an experienced wireless communication research team, with close ties to other subject areas at the department, forming a unified whole from electromagnetic theory and antennas design to the design of integrated circuits and advanced hardware systems.

Subject description

The research subject for this position is development of distributed processing strategies and algorithms for Large Intelligent Surfaces, including both joint baseband processing and synchronization across multiple sub-arrays.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

In context of the Large Intelligent Surfaces project, you are expected to perform joint research in the project team, on a selection of topics, including:

  • Development of distributed baseband processing strategies and algorithms.
  • Development of synchronization methods and protocols.
  • Contribute to the design and continuous development of the testbed built in the project.
  • Perform analytical and simulation-based evaluations of candidate algorithms and protocols for the testbed.
  • Evaluate and develop the Large Intelligent Surface concept in real environments, using the developed testbed as an experimental platform.

Work duties also include:

  • Teaching at an undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Documented knowledge in analysis and design of processing for Large Intelligent Surfaces.
  • Experience with development of distributed processing algorithms.
  • Experience with wireless system design and analysis, including antenna systems, baseband processing, and system simulations.
  • Documented ability to cooperate with other researchers.

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Experience with system simulation tools, such as MATLAB.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaborate in larger teams.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
