Description of the workplace

The Department of Physics at LTH, Lund University, is recruiting a researcher in physics with a focus on ultrafast nonlinear laser spectroscopy and diagnostics. The position is located at the Division of Combustion Physics, where extensive research is conducted on energy and combustion science, but also in several other fields, such as atmospheric science and catalysis. Development and application of laser-based measurement techniques is central in all of these research areas. The Division, which consists of about 70 people, is part of Lund Laser Centre (LLC) and the profile areas Photon Science and Technologies (LTH/Science Faculty), The Energy Transition (LTH), Aerosols (LTH), and Light and Materials (LU). The Division is also involved in undergraduate and graduate education.

The researcher position is situated in the research group of Prof. Joakim Bood and is funded by a research grant from the Swedish Research Council held by Dr. Ali Hosseinnia. The research will be undertaken in a collaboration project with the University of Edinburgh, meaning that the majority of the experiments will be performed in Edinburgh. The focus of the Lund/Edinburgh collaboration project is to develop coherent control concepts that can be implemented in coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) for measurements of important parameters in practical applications, such as temperature, species concentrations, and pressure.

Work duties

The tasks as a researcher mainly include conducting research. Teaching can also be included in the duties, but no more than a fifth of the working time. The position includes travelling and multiple longer stays (several months) abroad (Edinburgh).

Your research will be focused on ultrafast CARS with coherence control, both conducting experiments and developing models. You will be responsible for defined sub-projects within the overall framework of the research collaboration. You will work together with colleagues in Edinburgh and participate in the supervision of doctoral students.

The work duties also include:

  • Research in the subject area, specifically ultrafast non-linear laser spectroscopy and various coherence control concepts.
  • Application of the developed techniques for thermometry and species detection in combustion studies.
  • Write and publish scientific papers and present research results at scientific conferences and meetings.
  • Supervision of Master projects.
  • Administration linked to the duties listed above.

Qualifications

Appointment to a position as a researcher requires that the applicant has a PhD.

Required qualifications:

  • You have to have a PhD in physics or applied physics.
  • You have to have solid knowledge and extensive practical experience of CARS spectroscopy using ultrafast (femtosecond/picosecond) lasers.
  • You have to have solid knowledge and practical experience of laser diagnostics in combustion research.
  • You have to have very good cooperation skills.
  • You have to be able to conduct research independently.
  • You have to have very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Additional requirements:

  • It is an additional qualification if you have experience from interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • It is an additional qualification if you have experience from supervision of PhD students.
