Description of the workplace

The position is located in the Division of History at the Department of History. The department has about 90 employees divided into three divisions: History, Human Rights and East and South East-Asian Studies. The department also runs the National Graduate School in Historical Studies. We offer a vital and large teaching and research environment with active pedagogical development work. Work duties ande areas of responsibility

The announced position is connected to the research project “Ukrainian Long-Distance Nationalism in the Cold War,” which is led by Associate Professor Per Anders Rudling (Wallenberg Academy Fellow) and funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The project aims at deepen the general understanding of history, memory, and politics in East and Central Europe after 1989 and deepen the understanding of the political use of history in post-Soviet Europe and their diasporic communities. Central terms for the project are nationalism, transnational memory, identity and the instrumental use of history. Our research environment is studying how the war has impacted the memory culture in Ukraine and Russia, where the aggressor presents itself as victim of “Nazism” and “genocide.” The project aims at strengthening the research environment aimed at East and Central Europe at Lund University. Qualifications

The assessment is based upon scholarly merit and very good ability to develop and conduct research of high international standard within the area of political philosophy with historical orientation with an international focus. The latter pertains to the individual scholar, as well to her or his participation in the research group. The assessment with be made on the basis of the submitted documentation as well as in an interview.

There are three expectations on the research.

The first is that she or he is expected to conduct research at a high, international level in a project that is set up within the framework of the research project and which is expected to lead to a joint publication. In order to carry out this research good, documented knowledge of Ukrainian and Russian is a prerequisite.

Secondly, the researcher is expected to contribute to the larger research program and strengthen its general scholarly impact.

Thirdly, the researcher is expected to actively contribute to East and Central European Studies in Lund. In order to fulfill these expectations, and since the researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other members of the research environment, physical presence at the Department of History at Lund University is a requirement.

Requirements for employment are:

  • Doctoral degree in history of political philosophy or foreign equivalent deemed to correspond to a Ph.D.
  • Good, documented knowledge of Ukrainian and Russian
  • If the applicant has a native language other than a Scandinavian very good and documented knowledge of English is a requirement.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • Good, documented ability to develop and conduct research of high international quality in the intersection of history of ideas, political philosophy and post-Soviet studies.
  • Documented, active contribution in research cooperation and -environments related to Eastern and Central Europe, in particular at Lund University.

Further information

The position is until further notice and at 50%, starting December 1, 2023 or as agreed.

No publications are to be submitted with the application. At a later stage in the process the applicant may be requested to submit the five most significant publications (including the Ph.D. thesis)
