Lund University, MAX IV Laboratory

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

SAXS at MAX IV

The CoSAXS beamline, planned to go into operation 2018, is focused on SAXS/ WAXS measurements including solution scattering/bioSAXS and on utilizing the unique high degree of coherence at MAX IV by eventually adding XPCS to the experimental portfolio. In addition initiatives are made for adding another beamline where SAXS/ WAXS measurements will have high priority.  The MAX IV organization must therefore be strengthened with an experienced beamline scientist well acquainted with the above-mentioned experimental techniques. The position will foremost be connected to the CoSAXS beamline but we regularly work across different beamlines. Our work is often based on collaboration with other people inside and outside our organization. You must therefore want to work in a tight team, where we base our work on flexibility, sharing and openness.

Job Assignments

The applicant will be responsible for the development of solution scattering methods including BioSAXS and/or incorporating coherent scattering techniques at the CoSAXS beamline. Time will also be set aside for development of the applicants own research projects within any of these areas.

The applicant is expected to participate in the general work of implementing the CoSAXS beamline project. This includes:

  • procurement of already designed equipment for the beamline
  • design, specification, and procurement of the remaining parts of the beamline - in particular the experimental station(s)
  • installation and planning thereof for the beamline and its infrastructure
  • commissioning of the complete beamline
  • communication with and outreach to the existing and potential user community of the CoSAXS beamline

When the CoSAXS beamline becomes operational, the applicant is expected to participate in the general operation and further development of the beamline and its science.

This includes:

  • participation in the maintenance and upgrades of the entire beamline
  • support of user activities at the beamline including assisting users when planning and setting up experiments and with data analysis (SAXS and/or XPCS)
  • taking part in the development of a strong user community at the beamline

In addition, the applicant should be prepared to work with the design of optical and experimental setups for possible future SAXS/ WAXS beamlines on a conceptual level.

Qualifications

You have a PhD in a relevant scientific area. You must have a detailed and well documented theoretical and practical understanding of SAXS in general, including experimental implementations thereof. You have longstanding practical experience with working at or using synchrotron beamlines preferably including design and maintenance of equipment and support of external users including development of and assistance with relevant data analysis.

You must have extensive documented experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Solution SAXS and in particular BioSAXS
  • Coherent scattering methods especially X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS)
  • Design of optical solutions and of experimental equipment for SAXS/WAXS and/or XPCS
  • Installation, commissioning, and maintenance of synchrotron beamlines

You are looking forward to work in a project where we share knowledge and work together to find solutions. You have good communication skills and are used to work in project teams. It is also an advantage if you have experience of working as a team leader in an academic environment.
