Simulating and analysing the evolution of comets of the beta Pictoris exoplanet system at the Division of Astrophysics, department of Physics.

Work duties
In this project, the candidate will work on carrying out and analysing the simulation of the gravitational evolution of the Beta Pictoris system. The objectives are to use the REBOUND N-body code to determine the orbits of comets in the system, and to evaluate the effects of evaporation. The work will also include the analysis of spectroscopic observations from the high-resolution HARPS spectrograph, and the reporting on methods and results in written form.

 Qualifications

  • Education: Graduated or admitted to University education at least 90 credits in Physics, and/or 45 credits in Astrophysics.
  • Experience: prior experience with carrying out research projects in an astrophysics context, as well as with scientific writing.
  • Knowledge: Python language, orbital evolution of minor bodies
  • Competences: Usage of gravitational N-body simulations, and the analysis of high-resolution spectroscopic observations of exoplanet systems, Bayesian statistical analysis.

 Other merits

  • Experience: analysis of data with the HARPS spectrograph. Short-term project-based scientific work.
  • Knowledge: application of the REBOUND N-body model and Numpyro/JAX for Bayesian fitting.

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the work within the unit/department, as well as contribute to its future development.
