Description of the workplace

The Division of Risk Management and Societal Safety, at the Department of Building and Environmental Technology, conducts research and education in societal risk and crisis management. The division has a total of over 20 researchers/teachers and doctoral candidates, with a diversity of disciplinary backgrounds, employed. Additionally, around ten others have different formal connections to the division.    

Work duties

The world faces numerous complex challenges in building sustainable and resilient societies. These challenges involve interactions among various social actors (individuals, organizations, and countries) within institutional contexts characterized by differences in values, power, legitimacy, behaviors, methods, relationships, constraints, and uncertainties. Building the capacity of institutions to achieve societal resilience has been at the forefront of international development cooperation.

As part of this research position, you will participate in an international capacity development program conducted by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) - International Training Program (ITP). Lund University supports MSB's ITP with ongoing evaluation aimed at increasing the likelihood of the project delivering positive impacts over time in participating countries. The purpose is also to learn from the project to enhance the chances of future projects being effective. Within the scope of the position, you will be involved in data collection, data analysis, documentation of analyses, as well as communication of analyses, conclusions, and recommendations to project participants. Additionally, some limited teaching within the subject area may become relevant.

Description of the work duties (ex.):

  • to support/assist the research group, research within the subject area.
  • Compile current research and disseminate knowledge within networks relevant to the ITP project
  • teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies (max 20%).
  • supervision of degree projects.
  • assist in seeking external research funding.
  • collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualifications

Appointment to a position as a researcher requires that the applicant has a PhD.

Required qualifications (ex.):

  • a PhD or equivalent research qualification within any of the following subject: Societal resilience, international development cooperation, or capacity development
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English. 
  • Knowledge of methods for monitoring and evaluating complex projects in international development cooperation.
  • Practical experience related to international development work and capacity development in sustainability and/or disaster risk management.
  • Ability to independently plan and conduct research studies, as well as strong collaboration skills.

Additional requirements (ex.):

  • Experience in coordinating monitoring and evaluation of complex projects involving multiple stakeholders.

Further information

The position is 30% of full time. The employment is limited in time until December 31 2024 with immediate entry, according to agreement.
