The research group
The research group headed by professor Johan Malmström focus on developing and applying proteomics techniques to characterize the molecular mechanisms behind invasive bacterial diseases. The research group has a particular focus on developing new proteomics techniques to investigate protein interactions between hosts and pathogen and to investigate systemic proteome changes during sepsis.

Work tasks and areas of responsibility
Project description

The work tasks will mainly include:

  • Mapping Antibody Interactions with Virulence Factors based on mass spectrometry (MS) data.
  • Leverage MS to design effective binders to virulence factors.
  • Identifying and contextualizing biomarkers using machine learning and graph theory.

Other tasks within the working group may also be relevant.

Qualifications
Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in biotechnology, computational biology, biomedicine or similar fields.
  • Documented experience in analyzing proteomics data.
  • Documented experience in the computational analysis of protein structure and energy-calculations.
  • Previous experience in working with infectious disease, bacteria and host-pathogen interactions.
  • Previous experience in large-scale computational modelling.
  • Documented knowledge in programming languages such as python, cpp, SQL, R.

We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented self-starter and be able to work independently.
You must even be able to work at a fast pace and have agile decision-making - using evidence and making judgements to balance speed, accuracy and risk.

Highly desirable:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Additional information
We are now looking for a PhD student at 100 % for a time-limited employment of 4 years, according to HF ch. 5 § 7,.
Desired start of 2024-02-01.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
