Description of the workplace

This is a joint position wherein 50% of the job responsibilities involve managing the microscopy platforms for the Strategic Research Area MultiPark (Multidisciplinary Research environment on Parkinson’s disease and related disorders) and 25% of the job responsibilities involve performing immunolabelling and microscopy quantification of brain sections. The unit hosting the position will be the Experimental Dementia Research Unit at the biomedicine centre (BMC) in Lund.

At the research unit for experimental dementia, research is conducted within/with the aim of understanding the mechanisms of pathogenesis sand means of improving translational research on dementias. The unit is headed by professor Gunnar Gouras.

Work duties

In the role as research engineer you will work with tasks that include managing and maintaining several microscopes that are part of the Strategic Research Area MultiPark. This includes training of new users, maintaining a schedule of usage, troubleshooting and advising users.

You will also implement methods to study alterations in pathologies in models of Alzheimer’s disease. For this, you will plan and carry out sample preparation and the relevant experiments. With the data obtained, you will perform data analysis and statistical analysis with which you will use when writing manuscripts. Other existing tasks within the research group may also become relevant.

The work is carried out on site in Lund.

Qualifications

For this position, you must have

  • PhD in biomedical science relating to neuroscience
  • Good knowledge in research in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias
  • Good knowledge and experience with light microscopy methods (epifluorescence and confocal)
  • Documented experience with 3D image visualization and analysis
  • Experience with tissue cutting/processing and immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence
  • Experience with quantifications of microscopy images
  • Good knowledge of statistics
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English as well as experience in writing and publishing manuscripts
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good collaboration and support skills as well as the ability to work independently
  • Persevering

 

Meritorious for the position are:

  • Good knowledge of brain anatomy
  • Experience of analyzing data related to Alzheimer’s models
  • Experience using IMARIS and ImageJ software
  • Experience in the analysis of amyloid and tau pathologies
  • Experience using Zeiss, Leica and/or Nikon microscopy systems

 

Terms of employment

The employment is a special fixed-term employment (SÄVA) of 11 months, with scope 75%. Desired start date is February, 2024, or as agreed.
