The Division of Food and Pharma conducts research and education with relevance for the food and pharmaceutical industry and other related areas. Description of the workplace

You will work within the formulation group at the Department of Food and Pharmaceuticals. We work with the formulation of pharmaceuticals and foods as well as areas that fall between these, such as probiotics. For us, both teaching and research are important, and we teach several educational programs in food and pharmaceuticals. We work frequently in partnerships with industry, and in this project we will work in close cooperation with BioGaia AB.

Subject description

Pharmaceutical technology focuses on the science needed for the formulation and production of pharmaceutical products. In this case, the focus is on formulation and freeze-drying of pellets for probiotics.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position are to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity for further development.

The work duties include:

  • Research within freeze-drying of probiotic bacteria including characterization using tomography.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements


Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Requirements:

  • You have a PhD degree in pharmaceutical technology, food technology, biotechnology, or equivalent
  • You have documented experience with freeze-drying of pellets including probiotics
  • You have documented experience in conducting and evaluating x-ray microtomography
  • You have documented experience of microbiological methodologies
  • You have documented experience in down-stream processing of probiotics
  • You have documented experience in teaching such as tutoring of students
  • You have documented experience of collaboration between academia and industry

Additional requirements:

  • Good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Very good collaborative skills with the industry
  • Very good capability to conduct independent research.

Assessment criteria


This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Knowledge of how to conduct freeze-drying of pellets including probiotics, and how to plan and conduct x-ray microtomography.
  • Knowledge of the interactions between formulation, freeze-drying process and the material structure after freeze-drying, specifically for pellets freeze-drying
  • Experience of applying for beam-time at synchrotron facilities
  • Very good ability to collaborate with industry.  
  • Very good capability to conduct independent research 

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
