Description of the workplace
The research group Cardiovascular research – immunity and atherosclerosis, located at the Clinical Research Centre in Malmö, focuses on immunological mechanisms involved in cardiovascular disease. By using animal models, in-vitro studies and large human material repositories we aim to develop new treatments and biomarkers for translation into clinical practice. Particular attention is awarded to myocardial infarction, inflammatory heart disease, atherosclerosis and stroke. The research group is led by Senior Lecturer Harry Björkbacka.

We are looking for a driven and motivated Associate Researcher to our research group to work with a project led by Professor Emeritus Jan Nilsson. The employment is a 12-months fixed-term position. The preliminary starting date is 1st of May 2024.

Work duties and responsibilities
The work includes characterization effects and pathways for cell activation of a novel family of peptides that stimulates growth and repair of the vasculature. The work will primarily be performed on cultured cells, but some studies may also involve experimental animals. The project has also a translational component in which the association between naturally occurring growth factors for vascular cells and risk of cardiovascular disease is investigated in existing cohorts and biobanks.

Qualifications
The following is required for the position:

  • Doctoral degree in medical science or equivalent.
  • Good experience of studies of cell surface receptors and their intracellular signals is an advantage.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of cell culture, histological analyzes, microscopy, RNA isolation, PCR / qPCR, Western blot, ELISA and multiplex cytokine analysis.
  • Good experience of animal models relevant for atherosclerosis and angiogenesis
  • Good experience of statistical analysis.
  • Good knowledge of English in speech and writing.

Special emphasis will be placed on personal qualities. We are looking for someone who enjoys working in a group, and can independently plan, carry out and lead projects. We want you to have good subject knowledge in the area, have imagination and creativity and thrive in a managerial role.

The following is meritorious for the position:

  • Earlier experience of working with novel growth-stimulating peptides derived from extracellular matrix molecules.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant, through experience and competence, is judged to supplement and strengthen ongoing research within the research groups and contribute to their future development.

Terms of employment
The employment is a fixed-term (SÄVA) full-time employment for a total of 12 months. Start date is 2024-05-01 or as agreed. The main rule is that employment at Lund University is conducted in Sweden, you are therefore expected to be able to carry out your work on site in Lund and Malmö.
