Description of the workplace 

The Division of Pure and Applied Biochemistry is part of the Department of Chemistry at Lund University, and we belong to Center of Applied Life Sciences (CALS).

The project is part of the industrial research center ScantOats. Our ambition is to take a world-leading role in the development of unique products and applications based on oat. The center will form a link between advanced basic research and industrial applications. This dual approach will benefit Swedish industry, society and agriculture in terms of new knowledge, new products, improved health, a more sustainable environment, increased exports and new jobs. Through the unifying force that ScanOats will provide, we expect that a variety of products and innovations will be delivered partly through members’ activities and partly by ScanOats directly.

Work duties 

The main purpose of this project is to identify new oat varieties with high content of different dietary fibres for further use in nutritional studies. The plan consists of doing laboratory activities to be able to develop a method in the future to identify oat lines with high levels of arabinoxylan. The work includes:

  • DNA-extractions
  • protein-extractions
  • PCR.

Other existing laboratory tasks within the research group may also be relevant.

Qualifications

Required qualifications for the position are:

  • Master degree in relevant topic, preferably biotechnology or food technology
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • Previous experience of DNA-, RNA-, protein extraction and PCR

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • Knowledge and experience with working with plants, preferably oats
  • Previous experience of working with arabinoxylans, starch hydrolysis and betaglucan quantification,
  • Previous experience of working with the technique HPLC
  • We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence. 

Further information 

The position is a fixed term position for 4 months at 100 per cent of full time and starting 2024-05-15.
