Subject description

It is widely recognized that the expansion of silica biomineralization in the oceans has affected evolutionary competition for dissolved Si (DSi) resulting in changes in the global biogeochemical cycles of silica, carbon and other nutrients that regulate ocean productivity and ultimately climate. Little is known about biological uptake of DSi by diatoms through geologic time. The goal of the project is to investigate the abundance of diatoms and the impact of silicifying phytoplankton during the Mesozoic.

Work duties

The main duties involved in this researcher position is to conduct research. Tasks will be:

  • Search for fossil localities during the Cretaceous and Jurassic time periods.
  • Extract and clean diatoms and amorphous silica from sediments.
  • Describe and identify amorphous silica material both under light microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and with Electron backscatter diffraction (EDS).
  • Writing manuscripts.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience with working with marine archives.
  • Knowledge taxonomy of Cretaceous diatoms.
