Description of the workplace

The position is located at the Department of Computer Science (https://cs.lth.se) and will be part of the strategic research area ELLIIT, Excellence Center at Linköping - Lund in Information Technology (https://elliit.se), a partnership between Lund University, Linköping University, Blekinge University, and Halmstad University. The holder of the position is expected to contribute to ELLIIT's broader goals within research, doctoral education, collaboration, and dissemination.

The department of Computer Science conducts research in a number of areas such as embedded systems, graphics, programming languages, software technology and engineering, robotics, and artificial intelligence. The research environment is part of broad research programmes such as ELLIIT (https://elliit.se), WASP (https://wasp-sweden.se), and NextG2Com (https://www.nextg2com.lu.se), with excellent opportunities for collaboration with other research groups both at Lund University and other Swedish universities.

The department offers a wide range of courses at the Engineering programs at Lund University, from introductory programming to specialized advanced courses and Master Thesis projects. The holder of the position is expected to give and further develop the master level course in Distributed Systems (EDAP25).

We are looking for a person with broad knowledge in the field and preferably with industrial experience.

Subject description

Distributed Systems focuses on how to program software systems on top of different kinds of computer networks, including mobile and dynamically changing networks, so that the systems become secure, robust, efficient, scalable, and flexible, and so that the systems become simple to construct and modify. The area includes: Software architectures and high-level programming for distributed systems; Support for robustness so that systems can handle interruptions in communication, failuring devices, and mobile devices; Software architectures to support security and privacy in distributed systems; Utilization of artificial intelligence to automatically optimize system performance and support automatic reconfiguration of systems.

Work duties

Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements 

Appointment as a Professor requires that the applicant has:

  • Demonstrated research expertise.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons. 

Assessment criteria

When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, with research being of greater importance.

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to Professor:

  • A very good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • A very high level of teaching skills, including a very good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • A good ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • A good ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Significant documented research experience (e.g. from postdoc or doctoral studies) from another university/institute or relevant experience from industry/public sector.
  • Collaborative skills, initiative and the ability to solve work tasks independently.

Other qualifications

  • Documented industrial experience in the area, for example through patents and software development. 

The extent to which the applicant, through their experience and skills, may complement and strengthen ongoing research, undergraduate education, departmental innovation, and how they can contribute to the future development of the department will also be taken into consideration.
