Lund University School of Aviation (LUSA) is recruiting Senior Lecturer focusing on applications and development of unmanned aerial systems (UAS). As a department at the Lund University Faculty of Engineering (LTH) LUSA serves as a competence node in Aeronautical Sciences; including sustainable aviation, unmanned aviation and aviation safety. We are also a certified commercial flight school and authorised drone school.

LUSA hosts several research infrastructures, including the UAS Lab but also a jet engine-lab for full-scale testing in jet engines. We strive to establish our UAS Lab as a national resource and research infrastructure on ground and in the air.

With this senior lecturership we seek the future leader of our research group in unmanned aerial systems. While actively developing the research group and its focus areas, the senior lecturer is also supposed to support research groups across the wide Lund University in their endeavours to apply and develop unmanned aerial systems in their respective domains. The senior lecturer is also expected to collaborate with various Swedish agencies and stakeholders, contributing to the development and application of unmanned aerial systems at a national level.

Subject

The subject of the employment is aeronautical sciences with a special focus on the development and application of unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Subject description

The development and application of UAS are conducted around a number of different aspects; including system integration, mission planning, autonomous flight, human-machine interaction, communication technology, aerodynamics, propulsion systems and materials. For this position we are looking for a senior lecturer with a background in either aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering (hardware), automatic control or computer science (software) to contribute to the development of UAS for various societal applications.

Work duties

Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Participation as an expert in national and international projects on unmanned aerial systems
  • Provide support, through the UAS Lab research infrastructure, for researchers and research groups at Lund University, in their efforts to apply or develop unmanned aerial systems in their research.
  • System integration of UAS.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to senior lecturer requires that the applicant has:

  • A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regard to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.

Assessment criteria

When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, with research experience being the most important.

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to senior lecturer:

  • A good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A general ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience from developing or operating manned or unmanned aerial systems.
  • Collaborative skills, initiative and the ability to solve work tasks independently.

Other qualifications

Significant documented research experience (e.g. from postdoc or doctoral studies) from another university/institute or relevant experience from industry/public sector.

  • Authorisation to operate unmanned aerial systems in the EASA Open A1/A2/A3 categories.
  • Experiences from development projects
  • A previous holder or holder of a flight certificate.
  • Completed ATP(H)- or ATP(A) theory.

The extent to which the applicant, through their experience and skills, may complement and strengthen ongoing research, undergraduate education, departmental innovation, and how they can contribute to the future development of the department will also be taken into consideration.
