Description of the workplace

The research at The Division for Integrated Electronic Systems (IES) at The Department of Electrical and Information Technology (EIT) is a balanced effort combining system and circuit design aspects. Our excellence is the design of integrated circuits (chips) in advanced nanometer CMOS technologies, including digital signal processors, radio frequency and millimeter wave front-ends, data converters, as well as larger systems with a mixture of analog and digital signals. At IES, we are also co-hosting the multi-disciplinary research center ”Multidisciplinary Research Centre for Semiconductor System Design” (classIC), funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), for semiconductor system design.

The position is associated with the classIC center. The research is conducted in a competitive multi-disciplinary environment. Expertise in the core subject of integrated circuit design, and in the implementation of dedicated hardware for high-performance wireless connectivity, will be offered and further developed. A key application area will be extended reality and wireless systems.

Our team includes faculty, researchers, and administrative staff, fostering a rich intellectual environment for collaboration. We offer a supportive work environment, promoting work-life balance and professional growth. New employees can engage in cutting-edge research, educational initiatives, and industry collaborations, contributing to our mission of advancing integrated circuits and systems design.

Subject description

The subject for this position is Electrical Engineering with a specific focus on integrated circuit and system design, where theoretical studies of system-level requirements as well as circuit design and verification of advanced architectures are included. Efficient implementations of integrated circuits, bridging performance and energy perspectives, are becoming increasingly important in many application areas. The research will be performed at theory and application boundaries, as well as an integrated chip realization for validation purposes.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20 per cent of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the subject area.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience with theoretical and practical aspects of integrated circuit and system design for wireless connectivity.
  • Good knowledge on different implementation methods of reconfigurable transceivers for advanced wireless applications.

The duties require you to comply with US export restrictions (EAR) (bis.gov).

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Knowledge in the general area of wireless communication and in particular circuits and systems intended for use in MIMO architectures.
  • Experience in implementation and verification of integrated circuits in advanced CMOS processes, including system-level requirement development.
  • Experience with advanced CAD tools for the design and implementation of integrated circuits.
  • Experience working with modern measuring instruments for circuit characterization and verification at radio frequencies/millimeter wave frequencies and verification of digital circuits.
  • Documented experience of integration of digital and analog blocks, RTL to GDSII, and low-power design.
  • Documented experience with advanced CAD tools for the design and implementation of integrated circuits in advanced CMOS processes.
  • Documented experience from both standard-cell and full-custom integration.
  • Documented experience of teaching, for example lectures, exercises, lab supervision, project supervision.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
