Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace

Our research group develop biophotonics and remote sensing of our biosphere. Specifically, we are currently developing methods for estimating the species richness of insects. Our division in the Enoch Thulin laboratory has aproximatly 60 researchers. For the last decade the division hosted the group for applied molecular spectroscopy and remote sensing for applications in environmental monitoring and biophotonics. https://www.llc.lu.se/research-fields/research-fields1/environmental-monitoring/ During this time our group developed new measurement techniques, in particular laser-radar (lidar) for free flying wild insects. The applications include monitoring pests and assessing species richness. We now aim to develop compact instrumentation for collection of one billion insect observation for comparative studies between habitats over the seasons.

Work duties

We are developing laser instrumentation for assessing diversity of free flying insects in field. We now need engineering assistance with developing compact, weatherproof all year instruments, which can be deployed in field. The project involve design of mechanics (CAD), circuitry (PCB), laser photonics (Raytracing), field testing, laser remote sensing, spectroscopy, signal processing (DSP) and advanced unsupervised clustering method (HCA). The work duties includes:

  • System level photonic engineering
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing
  • Circuitry, simulations and PCBs
  • Testing and calibrations in laser remote sensing and spectroscopy
  • Field deployment and testing
  • Signal processing (DSP), data pipelines, and unsupervised clustering (HCA)
  • Scientific visualization and reporting

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • M.Sc. or Eng. in physics, photonics, electronics, instrumentation, mechatronics.
  • Experience photonic measurements and/or optical instrumentation.
  • Experience with dynamic signals, advanced statistics and clustering methods.
  • Excellent skills in engineering arts and mathematics/statistics/DSP.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Good collaborative skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Documented experience in CAD, CNC, 3D printing, Raytracing, PCB circuit design or instrumentation, analysis of dynamic signals is beneficial, such as master thesis work, internship and/or scientific publications.
  • Interest and knowledge on ecology, environmental monitoring, biophotonics or spectroscopy.
