Subject description

Investigation of aluminium/steam combustion is the subject of research, which will be a teamwork involving close collaborations of the experiments, kinetic modelling, and computation fluid mechanics simulations. The main task for the postdoc will be on the experimental part but also being involved in the CFD and kinetic activities.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

You will have the main task in designing and performing experiments on aluminium/steam combustion. The metal fuel team presently consist of three seniors and two PhD students. Your main responsibility will be the experimental part and together achieve an in-depth understanding of the governing mechanisms.

Description of the work duties:

  • Design and operate a spray of aluminium/steam mixtures.
  • Perform optical measurements of the spray for particle size and distribution characterization.
  • Perform experiments with laser diagnostics to study aluminum droplet combustion and support the modelling work with valuable data.
  • Supervision and collaboration with PhD students in the lab.
  • Work on applying for external research funding.
  • Writing research reports and papers for conference and scientific journal.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Education in thermal engineering, chemical engineering, or physics.
  • Education in thermal physics and engineering.
  • Research experience in thermal physics and engineering.
  • Research experience in laser-based combustion diagnostics.
  • Research experience in spray and solid fuel combustion.
  • Personal qualities that are required, e.g., independence, cooperativeness.

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Research experience in metal fuels is an outstanding merit.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
