Subject description

Industrial design is a creative intellectual activity that questions, shapes and visualises objects, systems, and interactions. The discipline of design is firmly embedded into cultural frameworks. Today, almost any issue can become the subject of design processes. Our industrial design education in a university environment is developed continuously and collaboratively, focusing on all ongoing changes in society, business and research.

We are seeking a lecturer in porcelain-making to teach primarily, but not exclusively, industrial design students to design for and practice an analogue craft.

The position is one year and is organisationally located at the Division of Industrial Design.

 Work duties

  • Teaching in the first and second cycles of studies.
  • Teaching of and consulting students in the entire design to production process of porcelain-making.
  • Collaborate with other industrial design teachers in projects where porcelain is a suitable medium of functional and formal aesthetic expression.
  • Organisation of the plaster and porcelain workshop including the ordering of materials and tools and organising their availability and maintenance.
  • Administrative tasks related to the work duties listed above

 Qualification requirements

Appointment as a lecturer requires that the applicant has:

  • Completed a second-cycle degree or acquired corresponding knowledge and has other skills of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means.

Additional requirements:

  • A minimum of five years of professional work experience as a porcelain-maker with practical experiences of relevance to the post.
  • Good competence in modelling, slip-casting, glazing, firing and serialisation of objects.
  • Specialisation in plaster slip-cast mould-making for serial production.
  • Good competence in judging the formal aesthetics and utility value of a proposed design regarding its level of innovation and feasibility.
  • Teaching and organisational expertise in a primarily workshop-centric subject that is focused on materials, tools and processes.
  • Good knowledge of history, industry, market segments and trends related to the subject.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

 Assessment criteria

For appointments to lecturer, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • Good subject knowledge of relevance to the post and the duties it will involve.
  • Good teaching ability including a good ability to develop and pursue teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • Very good professional experience or other experience of relevance to the post.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
