Duties and areas of responsibility

The HIBEAM/NNBAR collaboration proposes a two-phase experimental program at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund to carry out high-precision studies of neutron conversion across various baryon-number-violating channels. The program addresses fundamental questions in modern physics, such as the origin of the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry and the nature of “missing matter” in the Universe, commonly referred to as “dark matter.”

The team from Lund University is responsible for the HIBEAM beamline and a Time Projection Chamber (TPC). For the subsequent NNBAR experiment, the team is also tasked with overseeing the entire NNBAR beamline and its TPC.

Your primary responsibility will be to coordinate the research and development as well as the subsequent construction of the TPC for the HIBEAM project. Additionally, you will assist the HIBEAM/NNBAR team at Lund University with all technical development aspects, including the design and construction of all magnetic-field aspects related to the infrastructure of HIBEAM. This role emphasizes hardware development and experimental operations, so prior experience in these areas is essential.

In the first few years of the position, you will participate in testing the TPC prototype developed in Lund and use this experience to refine the design and construction of the HIBEAM TPC as well as contribute to the development of the entire HIBEAM beamline. Subsequently, your efforts will shift toward supporting the NNBAR project.

Requirements for the position:

  • experience in developing and using gas systems in connection with TPC
  • development experience with track detectors of the TPC type and their use
  • proficiency in using data acquisition systems for multiple parameters
  • knowledge of FPGA programming
  • documented experience with software for simulation, particularly MCNP, MCPL, McSTAS, and GEANT4 for beam studies at neutron facilities
  • documented experience in planning, preparation, installation, and execution of experiments with particle beams at accelerator laboratories
  • experience in analyzing data from experiments in nuclear and particle physics
  • experience working at neutron facilities proficiency in fundamental and applied science with neutrons
  • ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, in an international environment

Preferred qualifications for the position are:

  • experience with laboratory work at universities
  • operation and development of scintillation detectors
