Project assistant at Department of biology – Functional ecology

Work duties

The project is part of a larger FORMAS-funded project focusing on environmental drivers for harbour porpoise distribution and diet in Swedish waters. Work duties include planning, preparation and execution of data collection using F-PODs for passive acoustic monitoring of harbour porpoises in Öresund. It includes long days at open sea during deployment and service/retrieval of equipment. The work also includes handling and analysis of large data sets. Further, it includes active collaboration with involved stakeholders and students.

 Qualifications

  • Education: MSc in marine biology
  • Experience: Extensive experience in marine biology field work, particularly within harbor porpoise ecology and behavior. Extensive experience in passive acoustic monitoring of harbor porpoises, including handling and preparing of equipment, deployment/service at sea, and extraction and analysis of data.
  • Knowledge: Fluency in Swedish and English, technical knowledge of C-PODs and F-PODs
  • Competences: experience of research project management, goal orientation, ability to perform statistical analysis of C-POD/F-POD data in R, experience of scientific research collaboration with stakeholders such as municipalities and the County Administrative Board, documented ability to communicate scientific research results to the general public
  • Other requirements: driver’s license for car, thorough experience of boat based field work

Other merits

  • Work experience of long days at sea in small research vessels, during all times of year and in all weathers. Demonstrated ability to organise and carry out all parts of passive acoustic monitoring projects of harbour porpoises. Experience of analysing and publishing data from passive acoustic monitoring of harbour porpoises in peer-reviewed journals is meritorious.
  • Local knowledge of the Öresund area and good connections to involved stakeholders is meritorious
