Led by the HSE Group Manager, our safety group comprises three teams: Experimental Safety, Radiation Safety, and General Safety. Our team of 16 specialists brings diverse expertise in various HSE fields, including security and radiation safety. We provide essential support and guidance to MAX IV projects and operations, ensuring compliance with Swedish safety standards and legal requirements. As our research facility thrives on its innovative and exploratory nature, the Experimental Safety Team (EST) are dedicated to support our staff and researchers to produce excellent science while maintaining the highest safety standards.

MAX IV is looking for a dedicated Chemical Safety Officer to join our Experimental Safety Team for a temporary 1-year position, covering maternity leave. In this crucial role, you will ensure the safe handling of various solids, liquids, and gases used in user experiments at MAX IV. You will be pivotal in evaluating experimental risk assessments, assigning mitigations, and following up with visits to experimental stations. Your contributions will be key to the team's support and daily operations.

Your main work tasks will be

  • Support Experimental Safety Processes: Ensure overall safety in experimental work processes
  • Evaluate Safety Aspects: Assess and provide solutions for gas and chemical safety in user experiments
  • Assist Beamline Scientists: Provide support concerning safety requests, logistics, and requirements related to gases and chemicals
  • Infrastructure Support: Aid relevant groups in developing new infrastructure associated with chemicals and gases
  • User Operations Safety: Assist in maintaining safe operations for user activities at the experimental stations
  • Experiment Hall Safety: Implement and support safety measures in the experiment hall.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • Educational Background:
    • MSc. or Ph.D. in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience:
    • Practical knowledge and experience in handling hazardous chemicals/gases
    • Proficiency in chemical/gas safety management
  • Language Skills:
    • Excellent command of spoken and written English

Below are seen as merits

  • Experience in conducting chemical/gas risk assessments for experiments, particularly in synchrotron facilities
  • Understanding of technical systems on a synchrotron beamline, gained through work experience or user activity in such facilities
  • Proficiency in the Swedish language is considered a strong asset.
