The Department of Computer Science is Hiring a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science with focus on AI / Machine Learning and Robotics

The position is placed in the Robotics and Semantic Systems division (https://rss.cs.lth.se) of  the Department of Computer Science (https://cs.lth.se) at the Faculty of Engineering. RSS has about a dozen researchers and about ten PhD students. It is involved in a number of externally funded projects, and several networks of excellence and competence centers at the LU and LTH level. Within the division, research is conducted in several loosely formed groups, focusing on topics like Robotics and Robot Learning, Human Robot Interaction, Machine Learning / Optimisation, Knowledge Representation, and Natural Language Processing. The RSS groups, together with researchers at the Automatic Control department, have a common robotics laboratory, RobotLab LTH, with several industrial and mobile robots (https://robotics.lth.se).

 

Subject

The area of research will be Computer Science with focus on AI / Machine Learning and Robotics.

 

Subject description

The subject area of this position affiliated with the division for Robotics and Semantic system lies within perception, applied machine learning and motion generation for autonomous mobile manipulation.

This area also includes also semantic SLAM, sensory-motor skill modelling and structured approaches to robot learning, where learning is strongly informed by priors imposed at design time and final integration towards working artefacts in the RobotLab LTH.

 

Work duties

Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies, in particular in courses in the area of AI / Machine Learning and specifically Robotics.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.
  • Engagement in the Department’s management and administration efforts.

 

Qualification requirements

Appointment to senior lecturer requires that the applicant has:

  • A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regards to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.

 

Assessment criteria

When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject,  assessing research and teaching expertise equally.

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to senior lecturer:

  • A good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A general ability to lead and develop activities.

 

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Significant and documented research experience (e.g. from postdoctoral appointments or graduate studies) at other universities or institutes or resepective relevant experience from industry or public service organisations.
  • Documented experience with robotic systems that are functioning within given use-cases
  • Knowledge of semantic systems, enabling continuation of research cooperations in these areas.
  • Proven ability to attract research funding
  • Good collaborative skills, initiative and the ability to solve work tasks independently.
  • Documented background in machine learning and/or perception, enabling teaching in these areas on an advanced level, and research cooperation.

 

Other qualifications

  • Experience in working with robotic hardware, ROS and ROS2 to enable active cooperation within the RobotLab LTH.
  • Experience with the development of robotic systems and respective software.
  • Experience in software engineering, enabling cooperation in this area within the department.
