Description of the workplace
The Research Group for Malaria and Babesia at the Department of Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology is led by Associate Professor Kristina Persson. We study the intraerythrocytic parasites that cause malaria and babesia and the mechanism for how the parasites enter red blood cells. Our goal is to find better medications but also to understand how immunity against these diseases is formed. We are looking for an Associate Researcher to the group for our ongoing project.

Work description
We are looking for an Associate Researcher to assist with the cultivation and analysis of malaria and babesia parasites. The Associate Researcher must be able to do this work independently and be used to assessing different life cycle stages of the parasites in order to provide treatment and nutrients at the right times. Supervision of PhD and undergraduate students may occur.

Qualifications
Requirements for the position are:

  • PhD in medicine or science relevant for the position
  • Experience with parasite cultivation and the knowledge to independently manage malaria and babesia cultures
  • Knowledge to independently assess different stages of the parasite's life cycle and when they need new culture medium, new blood, etc.
  • Knowledge to handle the microscope independently to stain and count the parasites
  • Fluently communicate in English

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • Broad experience of general laboratory work
  • Experience with flow cytometry and surface plasmon resonance
  • Experience of studies with different patient cohorts and ethical applications
  • Experience of teaching and supervising students and junior coworkers

Further information
The position is a fixed term position SÄVA for 4 months at 100% of full time starting November 1st, 2024, or according to agreement.
